Had a cheeseburger with fries and a coke for 21.00 and including tip its 24.00. Tasted no diff than a burger from A&W. Now I know I make ahit money. When I can't afford cactus club
an uncle burger combo at a&w costs $11 or $12 something - no tip. so a cactus cheeseburger is $21. are cactus twice as good? although that uncle burger is DANG tasty, i'm afraid to me it only tastes half as good as a cactus cheeseburger, so imho they compare pricewise

also, i notice that despite the price being clearly marked in the cactus menu, you bought it anyway instead of walking, so that makes you not quite as broke as you say you are

cheers :)

Their burger reminds me of A & W. The burger with fries and coke ended up being 21.00 after tax. Actually their burger was so so. I'd rather buy wendys. The newer Mcds like the one by science world has better atmosphere and pricing.

You should've done a dine and dash like the infamous LAG, judging by your posts lately you are definitely his designated replacement.

I was there last Saturday and all we ate was spicy chicken and calamari with lots of bevvies $286 later . I have never gone there for less than $100 in the end. It's just the cost of going out .

In Lust Mostly
Cactus Club has a great menu and you chose to go the cheap route by buying a burger.

Their fish dishes, salads and appies are excellent.

Comparing their burgers to A & W? You can not be serious. Want a burger go to White Spot etc.

Cripes $21 for a burger/fries/coke is ridiculous. Then again most dining establishments are
vastly over priced.Hell the food trucks in Calgary that started operating within the last
2 years are disgustingly over priced.I saw the menu for the Perogi Boyz food truck
last week and the most basic meal was 8 perogies with some sour cream/bacon bits
and green onions(and I dont think it is real bacon bits) and the price was $8....that
is $1 per perogie....fucking crazy when you buy a 5 kilogram box of perogies at Costco
for $10...and most likely that is where the Perogie Boyz food truck buys it's perogies.

As for going to the Keg and paying $40+ for a steak...I would rather buy a whole striploin
for $100 at Costco and carve myself 15 steaks out of it and do a better job of cooking them
on my BBQ....and also not get bent over and screwed for buying the baked potatoe.

I dont dine out in general....I do if I am on a date with a gal of course...dining out is
disgustingly expensive and for the most part it is a waste of money if of course you
have decent culinary skills....I for one can make a better burger than Cactus Club any day
and the same thing goes for grilling a steak....and for a lot of other things as well.

Learn to cook.....it is fun.....it can be inventive....it is way cheaper than dining out
and in most cases a lot tastier as well as no wage slave at a chain restaurant knows
your taste buds as well as you do.

Also I have to say that the food that chain restaurants make seems like institunionalized
food to me....mass prepared and for the most part bland and lacking in flavour and in most
cases ridgedly controlled portion wise....to the point that there is a wage slave whose specific
job is to individually portion each part of each meal including meat/seafood/poultry as well
as the veggies.....Earls(and all restaurants under that corporate empire) are famous for this.

Rant over.

i agree with SR, above, however its not always so easy to prepare that good ol' home cookin'.
especially for 1.

fwiw, the burgers at white spot are petty good. and if they don't fill you up you can have all the fries you can eat! so healthy.

i like the cactus club burger. i don't drink pop so its a little more $ for me than the op, due to the wine or beer.
earl's burgers are good too, but i find it depends on the location (broadway & fir seems to be best).
rogue on broadway has a good burger too (be warned: served "pink". i'm ok with that, but told them that if i got sick to my pants, i'd be doing it in their bathroom, not mine).

i wouldn't eat at wendy's mcd's etc. just not my thing.

as for the op's outrage, the price of your meal is on the menu, typically found outside the establishment. you can choose not to even enter the restaurant. its not like your burger comes, and then your HOT waitress says its extra for bacon, extra for fries, extra for ketchup... a scenario perhaps more familiar to many of the folks here.

Wait a minute...it's actually 15% BEFORE tax. Bill was $18.75 so 15% on that is $2.81 which he rounded up, plus the tax which was $2.25, total $24. Now THAT'S what I call tipping Canadian style!

I find this to be cheap. I tip on the AFTER tax bill, and usually more than 15% if the service has been good. And trust me, most of the servers/bartenders would find it cheap/insulting as well.

Restaurant prices are such a ripoff in Canada compared to US. $28 for burger and fries is stupid.

When I'm out for a burger, it's never just about the food. I prefer these places that have a good decor, good eye candy. And I'm lucky if I spend less than $50 on just my portion of the bill.
I have no idea why a $25 dinner bill became a 3 page thread topic.

so what would you have paid? $30? because the waitress was hot and paying her way through university?
gimme a break. $25 for a burger and a coke is nuts.

The whole restaurant industry is charging high, except the quick food places. a few years ago MacDonalds used to advertise change for a $1 at lunch. Now it is change from a $10 for lunch. Home food is the way to go.

No, it is called the government took the tip as the HST ate the tip. When I eat out, I like to pay the same with or without the HST.

Eating out in Vancouver is about the entertainment, not the food (in most cases). Especially during the rainy months, which is most of the year! For example, if you want a really expensive night out, yet noticeably missing any ambience, go to the movies. With the new VIP bar service while you wait for your movie to begin, VIP seating in the theatre, menu/food service/waitress at your seat, and coming-soon-to-a-movie-seat more bar service, this is easily a $100+ date.

I think this thread is more about how our dollar is getting us less and less everyday. In the end the consumer pays more when:

Governments take more
Corporations take more
People are not paid more
Advertisers tell you you need more

When people are bitching about the high price of a burger and fries it's a sign that things are getting bad. Earls, Cactus Club etc. are not high end restaurants; they are chain restaurants with prepared (not fresh) food.

All these chain T&A restaurants discriminate when they hire (when was the last time you saw a fat chick working at one of these places?) and nothing has ever been done about it. What do you think would happen if Superstore or Wallmart decided not to hire fat people?

Like others have said there are plenty of better locally owned better restaurants in Vancouver with great food from around the world.

I agree with everything you said except for the above regarding discrimination.

It's not discrimination. It's SMART business.

You properly described it as a "T&A restaurant". My clients and I are certainly not going there for the food.

We go there solely because of the servers. There is NO Earls, Catus, Joey's etc if there were to hire a fat chick.

Thankfully they have been able to beat the odds and continue to do this.

Superstore or Walmart does not depend on the appearance of their employees to attract customers.
