Wallet was stolen - looking for advice

A regular trip to my local gym cost me more then I expected today.

Upon putting my personal belongings in my locker (and locking my locker), I went and did my regular workout routine. I returned about 2 hours later, and upon opening my lock & locker, I found that my jacket was in disarray. I then checked my pockets and found my wallet missing. I however though did still have my keys and cell phone (in my other pocket).

I took the immediate steps of cancelling my credit card and my debit card. I made a phone call to my banks 1-800 line and then made a trip to a local branch to pick-up a new debit card.

I also had my drivers license (which I have to replace still) and also some fuel cards that I use for my job. I contacted my employer about the cards. I have also completed a police report at a local neighbourhood station.

My only stress point is "What can they do with my drivers license"? Am I going to be a victim of credit/identity fraud? Is there enough info from my drivers license to do me damage? I did not have my social insurance card in my wallet (if that's needed for Identity theft).

What have others experienced when this has happened to them? I tried calling Equifax/Transunion and all you get is recordings.

Appreciate any feedback/advice, etc. Any additional steps that I need to take?

thanks,
Cruiser

Thanks for the feedback.

I was worried more about the drivers license in terms of fraud. I thought that a drivers license would be enough for them to ruin me!

The only other thing that I had in my wallet was about 10 lottery tickets (8 for last nights Lotto Max and about 2-3 6/49 for tonights draw.) So if one of those tickets hits it big and the guy trys to claim the prize, I'd be curious to see what happens!

Little Asian Guy is correct, the odds are that your driver's licence is in the trash -- the large majority of thieves can't be bothered to do identity theft and will stop at cash and credit cards.

However, a driver's licence can be used for fraud if it is taken by more high-end criminals. It's just common sense. Plus, look at all the effort that governments have taken in the past few years to add security features to their driver's licenses. They wouldn't have done that if there was not a significant risk of identity theft.

I think you have done the most important thing, which is to report the theft to the police. To be safe, I would hang onto that police report for about a year in case you need to prove your identity was stolen. Then keep a close eye on all your bills during that time to make sure there is no unusual activity.

Once that time has passed it's probably safe to assume nothing was done with your ID. Sophisticated thieves will likely operate quickly once they've stolen your ID, so if nothing happens in the first bit you should be ok.

Something else that can protect vs theft is carrying 2 or more wallets, and dividing important items
between them, so as not to have all one's eggs in one basket.

Phone them back and tell them what happened and they will flag your file incase anyone tries to get new credit in your name.

I'm curious as to how they got into your locker. What type of lock was used? Were you at a public or private gym?

That is why I don't go to gyms.
I've been a member of Club Fit/World Health Club for many years, I bring my own combination lock for the locker, and never had a theft issue.

nothing would happen if u write your name & phone # on the ticket.
