Actually those people DO have control over it with regards to suggestive selling and I know as I was once a lowly 7-11 worker...at that time it was not a practice to suggestive sell but if it were I would not have done so regardless about management policy so as not to be a douchebag who pisses off customers.
I dont know how long ago you were a 7-11 worker but when i worked retail about 15 years ago, i was REQUIRED to mention programs or upsell accessories. I had a quota to maintain and if i didnt meat such quotas i would have to go in for 'training' so that i could help increase the numbers for the store.

Customer service in today's retail world is almost non-existant, its pretty much about making your quotas (if you're no on commission) You really took it out on the wrong person. If you really wanted to send the store a message, why not leave a message on their customer service number. I had no interest in some of the things i was prettty much forced to flog to customers.

PS. and for everyone scratching their heads, no i am not talking to myself. Notice the lack of space between M and R. ;)

Dude, you know what?? Seriously, sometimes we all need to RANT no matter how insignificant it may be to others, there's no need to justify it, no need to prove yourself or otherwise .. sometimes we just gotta get off our chests.

Was driving home from my parents in Aldergrove last night back to Vancouver.
Stop at a Mcdonalds drivethough around midnight, to get the $1.05 large coke zero.

"You want a combo with your drink?"
"No"

"you want an apple pie?
"Sure, why not"
"We don't have any ready it will take 7 minutes"
"..................just the coke zero then "

Then you're not thinking about it hard enough, or indeed at all.
Absolutely, everyone in Sales is taught to value add to a customer's request. Like others have chimed in they are required to ask if you "want the combo" etc. They are just doing their jobs and S R you need to cut these minimum wage workers some slack. They most likely are not commissioned employees just minimum wage workers.

Actually there is 1 stormrider and 1 storm rider. How are we going to differentiate them ? Let's see...the one without the spacing has got it together ?

Would have made more sense if one was from Saskatchewan and one was from Ottawa.

"Oh, and give me a two-dollar 6/49 as well.."

"Do you want the Extra?"

"Sure, if I can get it for two dollars (smiles)"

They HAVE to ask. Part of the deal when selling Loto tickets. Life is too short to get angry over little things like that.

One of the poutine places I frequent usually asks if I would like extra cheese curds, and I always say yes (I'm treating myself, so of course I go all out). One time they forgot, and when I got home and realised all I had was regular old poutine I was very sad :(

So, have you boycotted Costco as well ? Being a Costco member myself, I see and experience this eveytime I go in to shop, they upsale to their members many charitable causes throughout the year. You've commented a few times on how much you believe " Costco Rocks " .

A friendly suggestion... Shop online only.....That way, you avoid people comments as you've specified. :pound:.
I can honestly say I have NEVER been pestered at Costco with regards to suggesstive selling nor have I EVER been pestered about donating to a charity at the register.

I dont take pleasure in being rude to the people that are on the bottom rung of the ladder but at the same time I used to be in the same position and I refused to suggestive sell stuff to people and thusly pester them with stuff they did not want.As a consumer it just plain pisses me off to be harrassed this way and
I will be vocal about it in the future.

As for the BS public shaming of asking people to donate to a charity at the register and thusly giving the corporation a collective tax break I think it is reprehensible....and truth be told the idea is based of public shame....the person ahead of you donated his/her change or maybe $2 so the idea is to shame you into doing the same....whilst building up a fat charitable tax donation for the corporation with no expense to itself....all based on public shame.

Grocery stores are forever asking if I want to donate a buck or two to their charity. You feel like a bit of a heel by saying "no" in front of a bunch of people, but I just don't see the point. It's a brilliant scheme... the store makes the donation, using your cash, and it gets a big tax receipt. No thanks! I'll donate to a charity of my choice!

At the safeway near me, that now bothers me for money 100% of the time.
They now have a sign at the cashiers saying how 100% of the donations go to the cause.
How sleazy, they have to let us know they aren't stealing the money, just the tax break.

Not directed to anyone in particular but do you guys see the irony of throwing thousands annually towards self gratification of seeing SP's without as much of a blink of the eye but when Safeway asks you for $2 for a charity, some of you get very bent out of shape?

It's all perspective and beating up on someone verbally because its their job to try to get you to buy the Combo or the cashier asking you for $2 towards Diabetes, Cancer, etc etc.

I just find these threads very strange.

The "charity" gig is annoying because of 2 reasons:

1 - It's money in the pocket of a big corporation. I pay them enough already, for basic necessities.

2 - It's more than simple "value added" or pressure sales, it's playing on the shame game to try to coerce you into giving them free donation cash (do you save face and fork it over, or be resolute and send your money where you want it to go?)

I never comment on it to the cashiers, it's just their job... but it is a good scam for the company. Yes, the money does go to charity... but they are getting a free tax rebate at your expense. I chafe at that... and so do not fall in line with their corporate tactics.

The rest of it is about the constant badgering and requests for handouts... the expense out of pocket really isn't the issue for most people. I can understand the annoyance, just not the lashing out.

This just plain pisses me off.The latest instance of this occured to me twice today. The first time was at a gas station when I purchased a pack of cigarettes.I was asked if I wanted to purchase a lighter. My response was "If I wanted to purchase a lighter I would have asked for that as well" to which I got no response. The second instance was when at just past 2PM I decided to hit 7-11 for a slurpee(the bonus was that lime was on tap) and when I paid for it the zombie wage slave asked me if I would like to buy a hot dog to which my response was "If I wanted a hot dog I would have asked for one as I cant get it myself" and the reply was "I am just doing my job and there is no need to be rude"My response was "yeah well dont pester customers with suggestive selling via the corporate mantra that has been brainwashed into you and your job will be easier".

How the fuck am I being rude by speaking up as a paying consumer and saying I dont want something that is offered to me when I did not ask for it?

Cripes I am sick to death of this practice and it seems the only way to fight back is to be verbally abusive when subjected to it so as to make the employees of establishments that enshrine this type of activity as standard doctrine decide to either revolt towards management in general because of public reaction or wake up and discover that people dont like being subject to suggestive selling like it is some kind of jedi mind trick that will cause them to buy something that they did not intend to buy.

The next person who asks me if I would like to buy 2 chocolate bars to get an extra air mile at 7 AM when I just stopped to buy cigarettes is going to get an earfull.

End of Rant.

Take a deep breath... the poor slob is just doing what good sales people and clerks are supposed to do. It's really not that hard to decline politely. Cut the shmuck some slack.

You're not going to make it in life if you let stuff like that piss you off. Let it go.

The combined pot of money provided by a corporation costs a lot less to count and donate than simply putting your Toonie in a kettle. It does save money for the charity in the end.

If they are putting 100% of the money into the charity then I have Zero problems how they do it. You look at all these charities for children in Africa < $0.30 on the dollar ever reaches them because of all the overhead paying many hands before it hits the African Continent.

I will just keep giving to Dry Grad at the Liquor Store, $2 here and there at the til of the major retailers. It's no biggie to me.

Annually I give to Heart/Stroke, Diabetes, and a couple of other major charities for an actual receipt. The rest is just pocket change that I would otherwise give to a homeless person with a mental illness (not a drug addict).

On a lighter note, this is not the way to suggestively sell strawberries:
