Sports fans in general are suckers, or else they wouldn't buy over-priced crap with team logos or pay extra for pay-per-view games, but the way hockey fans have stormed back into the cult without a peep is really incredible. The league and the teams have cut payroll expenses by 26%, the rosters have been reduced and they now have these back-to-back games that save a huge amount on travel costs, but by-and-large there has been no reduction in tickets prices and the teams keep raking it in. Anyone who doesn't get a free ticket to games from the company they work for is an idiot. The fans had all the power after the lock out and could have forced the teams into ticket cuts by refusing to buy for a while, but they totally blew it in their fervour to see Manny Malhotra and Kyle Wellwood.

Any man who is not a sports fan is a bit of a pussy in my book. Go back to knitting.

The problem was most teams in the NHL were losing money.. so why would they roll back ticket prices after cutting expenses? Then they would be back at square one. What is wrong with teams making money anyway? That is the whole point. It's not a fucking charity. If the 'nucks are selling out every game year after year, it would be pretty stupid to role back the prices. If you can't afford to go, no need to be bitter. I'm sick of these guys who wanted a boycott. Get a reality check, it never would of happened so save your breath.

Actually, if a team can sellout the whole season before Game 1 then economics would dictate that it should probably raise prices.

*****IDEA*****

I've always wondered why teams (in any sport) don't have different prices for different opponents. For example, I would pay more to see the Red Wings or Flames than to see an also-ran team.

I would rather pay $150 for a mediocre seat to see the Flames than $125 for a great seat to a Columbus game.

This way the team would reap some of the profit that is otherwise headed for scalpers......

Just an idea that I've always had....(NOT THAT I WANT HIGHER PRICES!!)
Nice idea, but illegal.

Price discrimination- can't be done.

To a certain extent it's the same idea as Safeway wanting to charge more for the exact same product in West Vancouver then they would in East Vancouver. If they could get away with it I'm sure they would.

*shakes head*

WRONG.....

The Buffalo Sabres are DOING JUST THAT

They have priced various teams at different levels(value/bronxe/silver/gold) and you pay more to see the more popular teams(leafs, etc.). There may be other NHL teams doing it, i don't know...

I think it's a great idea, and I'm sure more teams will follow suit.

I don't see any difference between that and an airline selling 1st class tickets

Newsflash people....SPORTS is BUSINESS!!!

Ok, ok

sue me.

I guess different teams constitutes a different product. 1st class airline tix is definitely a different product then economy seats, hence the difference in price. I'm just saying it's illegal for the same store, i.e. Safeway to charge a different price for the exact same product in different parts of the city.

Well, I would argue...that the GAP has to charge a little more in Pacific Centre or Metrotown as they have more overhead there, than they would in Surrey or Coquitlam. There is no doubt, the prices along Robson street are more than they are at the same store in Surrey......

NO?

And, don't you think that the Toronto Maple Leafs are a different product than the Florida Panthers??????

The league stepped up and made an effort. Competition, NEW PLAYERS on NEW TEAMS, NEW RULES to improve the flow.

That is why Canadians went back. CBC numbers are up 500,000 people per game on SATURDAY night.

That being said meaningless games in January are still meaningless, and average hockey with no emotion or intensity isn't worth $200 and that is what the league can't over come.

I'd rathar blow $200 at a hockey game then $200 on a hooker.

with hockey, at least I'm entertained for 2+ hours. Hookers are only good for a few minutes.

dumb question
I haven't been to an NHL game in like 5 years. I took a date to a Flames/Leafs game here in cowtown and by the end of the night the evening cost just under $300 (including ticket cost) I haven't read every word of the thread but I would have to agree that alot of seats must be purchased by large companies and given to employees because alot of people out there cannot afford a night out like this. I ended going to a Hitman game last yearly only because the company splurged and purchased a private box (and some drinks as well which surprised me) Hell, some people bitch about the cost of going to the movies. I too hate going to the movies but because of the mindless, regergitated BS hollywood is trying to sell as apposed to the actual cost of going but that is a topic for another day

How about guys who cook? Are they pussies in Mustangjoe's book? Guys who like opera? Guys who have a cat instead of a rottweiler? And what have you got against knitting? Having a useable skill seems more "useful" to me than rooting for some sports team and wasting hour upon hour watching baseball, hockey, football, whatever. Who has the most to show for their time ... someone who's spent 10 hours watching sports or someone who's spent 10 hours knitting a sweater?

And before you fire back a "manly" reply, let me make clear that while I can cook, I don't like doing it. I don't know a thing about (nor like) opera. I couldn't knit something if my life depended on it. I do have a cat. I also like sports, baseball in particular. I guess I'm just of the opinion that thinking in terms of sterotypes is rarely accurate and almost never useful. :)

Not only that on airlines --- everybody sitting in the same row of seats on the same flight probably paid a different price for their ticket.

btw, only pussies watch sports --- real men play sports instead. :)

Try thinking of sports when you're with a hooker, and maybe you can increase those "few minutes" ;)

Safeway has better produce in west van then in surrey, same money. The top quality stuff don't go to Broadway and Commercial [ check it out,big difference]

LOL...I used to try hockey stats when I was 21 at University and my girlfriend had a single room. My first regular, reliable sex. But if I ever thought I might be 'premature', I'd drag up the hockey record book in my mind.

Funny, now that I'm older, its the opposite.

Talk about proving my point. Who said I'm not a sports fan? In your world I guess if someone doesn't own a cow he can't like milk?
Assuming most teams were losing money (very, very debatable) it was the owners that did it to themselves by paying outlandish salaries for ordinary players and not just the superstars. Why should the fans bail out someone who doesn't know how to manage their business? If they were losing money, they still had the assets. A losing franchise was still worth millions. If they cut expenses by, say 42%, it would hardly put them back to square one by cutting ticket prices by 22%. If you think ticket prices are just fine, I'm not trying to convince you otherwise, just keep on paying and polish that big "S" on your forehead as you enter the arena.
