Shaw Cable moving Golf Channel to digital

Shaw Cable is moving The Golf Channel to digital and showing movies on that channel 53.

I don't have, need, or want digital tv. This means renting a digital box at $11/ month, or buying a refurbished box (no warranty) for $150 + taxes, or buying a new cable box for $345 incl taxes. No warranty on obselescence for the new box of course.

Also, there will be extra monthly charges for digital services. Might be alacarte for $3.00/ month, might not be, yet to be determined according to shaw customer service.

This is all about selling digital. Period. IMHO, most of us baby boomers are playing/watching golf, buying the sponsors products, and have access to more movies than we have time to watch before shaw cable put ACM on channel 53.

I think this is a huge rip off. Their cable business is a monopoly.

So, since shaw has told me to piss off, I need to complain to ....who, whom?

Does any one have any suggestions on who to complain to about shaw's unfair business practices.....consumers must have some rights....

The only one that you really could complain to would be the CRTC... http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/welcome.htm

I don't know what good that would get you though as Shaw probably applied to the CRTC to change the programming for that channel and they probably were granted that approval. Best way to complain is to complain with your wallet and cancel your Shaw subscription and get satellite.

Not this baby boomer. I rank golf right up there with watching paint dry, minus the excitement. And watching it on TV?? I've never been able to figure that one out.

Amen, brother!
I think this is less about personal taste in tv channels and more about Shaw's high handed consumer tactics...
Remember a few years back when Shaw introduced "negative billing"? If memory serves me correctly, this is at the same time that they introduced "tiers" of channels, with each "tier" or combination of tiers costing extra...of course, they had you by the nuts and would baffle you with bullshit (ie, "if you get one tier, it's eight bucks, 2 tiers, 16 bucks, but 3 tiers only 10 bucks," etc)
"Negative billing" was where they just gave EVERYONE the whole high-priced package unless you informed them that you DIDN'T want it.
Remember the huge en masse consumer backlash? I don't think Canadians were ever so united on an issue since WWII! I don't think you have a hope in hell fighting Shaw, since they do effectively have a monopoly (short of going dish or rabbit ears!), unless you have a whole lot more pissed off consumers to gripe about this particular tactic of Shaw's than you do now. :(

I think it was Rogers that used the negative billing before Shaw took over.

Just checked it out. They've now got a 24 hr movie network (American Movie Classics) on 53.

Since I'd rather take an eyedropper and drip iodine into my pee-hole than watch golf, THIS IS AN IMPROVEMENT.

I just wanted to say I'm in complete agreement with you. This is not just about golf. It's about profiteering. It's like getting GFE for an agreed amount each month and then the provider says from now on 69 is only available at extra cost.

I have no problem watching golf with Tiger, Phil, VJ, Weir, etc but you have to play golf to enjoy it on tv. The US networks cover most games and players very well. The Canadian Open, now that's watching paint dry.

You can still get the Golf Channel on basic cable. It is on channel 101.
Which completes the circle back to Bart24's original complaint. Even if it's a basic cable channel, channel 101 is part of the lineup of digital channels and so you need a digital box in order to receive it. He doesn't want the additional expense of digital.

Are you kidding?? Watching flies fuck is 20 times more exciting! And that's when the flies aren't doing anything out of the ordinary. When they're doing reverse cowfly, for instance, it's at least 50 times more exciting. *suddenly has brilliant idea for a new specialty channel*
