Hi knight882

It is possible for people to have symptoms of HIV and test negative for it.

There is a period of time, from when some one first gets HIV to when they would test positive on a test. This length of time really depends on the type of test that is being used. This is called the window period of the test.

They call it “HIV seroconversion illness” the symptoms that someone may get when they first get HIV (most people do not get these symptoms). Here is a link for more info.

Most of our current HIV testing in BC has a window period of 3 months but on average people usually show a positive result around 4-6 weeks.

Is this what you were looking at knight882 or is it a different situation?

One of the best resources I have found for HIV information on the web is.

I believe this is what the OP was refering to

China's mystery HIV-like disease may be all in the mind

Hundreds of people in China believe they might have a new disease with HIV-like symptoms, but doctors suggest their illness could be the result of a mental rather than a physical condition.

The Chinese authorities have been accused of covering up respiratory illnesses like Sars in the past.

This time doctors are blaming a breakdown in trust between the medical profession and patients, who fear they are being lied to when their diagnostic tests come back negative.

Thanks for the link cancowboy2001

I really liked the article, it brought up some really good points and fits into knight882 question.

It really shows what happens when you lose trust with the public health system. I can see why people may be reluctant to believe health care professionals if they have been lied to in the past.

In regard to the peoples symptoms I have seen many clients over the years that have had similar symptoms. I agree with the doctor in the interview in that I think many of these symptoms are caused by stress, anxiety etc… this is really fuelled by feelings of guilt and shame. It is amazing how much the thinking in the mind can affect the physical health of the body. It is such a shame that sex is surrounded by so much guilt.

One thing that I also saw in the article was the inability of healthcare professionals to provide proper care for these clients. This is something that also happens a lot in Canada as well.

If people are feeling like this giving them more information about HIV transmission, to look at things logical or another HIV test does not really help. It seems the key is around dealing with the emotions that are coming out.
