I've been to dozens of Vietnamese beef noodle soup restaurants in Vancouver, most of them mediocre and a couple of them downright repulsive. But I haven't found one that's dazzlingly excellent. About the best was on the east side of Main at about 21st ave. Can't remember the name - Pho Somethingorother.

Anyway, I'd appreciate any input on where to find great Pho, especially in Vancouver or Burnaby.

Happy slurping!

Ha...that's exactly the one i was going to recommend and when you get tired of Pho, go up the street to Hawkers for Laksa.

The one that I always go to is the Pho Ho on Kingsway and Nanaimo (next to the London Guard motel). It's clean and reasonably priced. I haven't tried very many other places.

Nice to see that someone besides me enjoys the spicy delights of Hawkers. If you are really into hot at Hawkers, try the mee siam (sorry, can't get the spelling correct, but close enough). I wish SF had the Singapore and Mayaysian restaurant choices that you enjoy there. What other places can you recommend for me? I also enjoy Singapore restaurant on Broadway for quick and cheap. These are two places I never miss when I am in Vancouver.

As for Pho, the place already mentioned is about the best I have found, but I believe it is more like 19 and Main, right where Main curves a little bit to the left.

Banana Leaf

If you like Singaporean/Malaysian food then try Banana Leaf on Broadway (south side) between Cambie and Oak. Not outstanding but it will do in a pinch.

Thanks for the reco, but no thanks. Been there, and also their location on Denman. I feel it is way overpriced, the same reason I now avoid Tropika.

I have also found some Sing/Malay restaurants in my wanderings around Richmond and on Fraser. Also, Auntie something-or-other on Kingsway across from Safeway, a little bit past Joyce. There I can get them to prepare something and get it fire-hot like I enjoy it.

Try Pho 66, it's on East Hastings by Boundry on the northwest corner. They are very good, even got a write up in the province. I suggest the satay prawns with vermicelli, it belive it's #59 on the menu. The outside of the building leaves a bit to the imagination, but trust me, it will be more than worth it to venture inside.

First time post and its about Pho, that's what happens when you move to Sydney and can't comment on any of the beautiful girls in Vancouver.

I agree Pho 66 is very good, great spicy beef and prawn soup, plus the owners cute, very fit daughter works on the weekend and is featured on the cover of the menu. I always like Pho Hoa franchises as well. Just be careful of any vietnamese restaurant with tinted windows, always wondered what was going on behind those windows.

Hawkers is a must, excellent food and at a reasonable price. Plus the owner flies back to South East Asia for new ideas. Mee Goreng is my all time favourite there.

In Sydney I found a Pho restaurant called the Naughty Chef, the name alone intrigued me and the food was very good. Most bowls of Pho cost between $7 or 8 Aus dollars.

All the Pho in Vancouver suck....

The best one is Pho Tam at Surrey Central Station.... The best in BC..

The other good one is the one in Langley Crusine Pho.

I agree with you, I often go there especially they have the special soups/dish during the weekends. Anyways, you can find a very fine one in Richmond called " Lan", it is located on No. 3 road at the intersection of Granville street (right across of the new Richmond City Hall). Enjoy and please let me know if you like it. This place also has a special spicy noodle, it is excellent.

I'll have to agree with browneyedgirl for SAIGON NO 1 and hugedman for Lan. I goto both restaurants quite frequently. Lan has a bigger menu but the restaurant is in dire need of a renovation, while SAIGON NO 1 is cleaner and more spacious. Both are excellent choices. :)

Happy phoing!

My two bits but I can't ever remember the names! Neither of these have the cinamon flavour or whatever some places seem to have.

Richmond: the one on Saba Road, one block in from No.3. This one has a soup that seems to be more "sweet", if that makes sense.

Burnaby: On Kingsway, across the street from Wendy's and beside the Chrysler Dealership.

There is a 24 hour Pho restaurant that I like to go to. It is on the north west corner of Kingsway and Nanaimo. It is in the same small strip mall as an adult video store and an AMP. Get some Pho and some pooning all at one location. :D

There's this one little place on Main Street.... i think it's between 19th and 21st avenue. Small little family run place with a yellow awning. Think it might seat about 35 people only.

It's quite good there.... and the portions are HUGE. Their 'medium' is like other places' large.... and their 'large' is just GINORMOUS!!!

They don't have the rice selection or anything else like other places, just pho and drinks, but hey, if that's what you're after, that place rocks!

Oh yeah, their lemon soda's good too.... *salivating*

Thai Son close to Richmond Center is also good.

For a pleasant entertaining meal

I was in Vancouver briefly last fall and had just seen Lisa Fox, a total hottie, & she recommended some things I should see while in the city, one I think was: “Hon’s Wun-Tun House” near Keefer & Main, Chinatown.

I found the place, went in and sat down in what felt like another country. The place was bustling and filled with Chinese speaking patrons. I ordered a medium noodle dish with chicken and was served a huge steamy bowl of kick-ass noodles heaped with spicy chicken that literally was melting off the bone.

I couldn’t believe my eyes and neither did the blanket shrouded vagrant just outside the window who shortly shuffled up to my table thereafter, ignoring all the hail of protests by Chinese speaking indignantaries, and I was certain he was going to grab my feast when he noticed another table, shared by 3 little nice old Chinese ladies, who had imprudently left a dish containing several $20 bills, the bill and fortune cookies. He took the whole thing fortune cookies and all, as well as their left-overs and shuffled out as quickly as he came in.

I was in shock, and everyone began talking wildly in Chinese. The Police eventually walked in shortly and took statements from the 3 little nice old Chinese ladies and I was surprised that they, the police spoke Chinese as well.

So don’t leave your money out on your table or blanket man will take it. And don’t sit by the window!
But the noodles are fantastic.

Best Viet

Owning one of the best Asian Restaurant in Vancouver, I have Viet staff member who says THAIson on Kingsway near Main street is the best. For Malay food, you can try a place on 41st and Fraser near Church chicken. For Thai food Simply Thai.

Hope this will help you out.
