Music was so much better in the days before Autotune

Not just the talent but most of the recordings back in the day were done live in the studio, with the whole band in one room.

One of my fav stories of Frank Sinatra was that he would show up to a session with the full orchestra already there and they'd had some time to work through a song or two. He'd do his usual thing, then say OK you boys ready for the rehearsal and they'd hit it. Of course he'd nail it, one shot and at the end of the song, would say something like that was good, see you all. And that was that, the band figuring well hell that was supposed to be a rehearsal. And the track was always great. Those of a certain vintage sure were lucky to grow up with such fantastic music!!

Rick Beato covers a lot about this topic -- it's not just auto-tune (though that's a huge part of it) but things like the lack of silence in songs, or a place where nothing happens for a few seconds. My fave is in Cream's 'Badge' --

The other thing that has been lost is the change in tempo. The Who's Baba O'Reilly changes tempo at least three times.

Finally, simple musical complexity. This is a cover of Fool in the Rain ... it's fairly simple up to 2:33 when it suddenly takes off and demonstrates why John Bonham was such a great drummer.

Been following Rick Beato for years, a great youtube channel for music lovers.
One of my local friends, a blues man who passed away some time ago, told me once, its not just the notes you hit but its the notes you don't that can make a song. So so true.

Starting out Bonzo used the heaviest sticks available and would go through three pairs a night. Switched up to medium ones near the end.

If we're going to talk about talent versus digit reproduction, remember when drummers needed to have talent before they were made obsolete with Pro Tools?
and you used to have guys who were studio drummers who would play the songs perfectly and be completely in the pocket for the whole song but then there’d be guys who were concert drummers who didn’t keep consistent time but played the shit out of the song and made it fucking come alive.
And now, if you’re lucky, a guy comes in, plays a bar and it just gets looped

Go watch a few vids on YouTube: @drumeo

Fun stuff, there’s still many talented people out there who play to make music, not for money.

Great artists and great drummers never stopped being born, people just don't discover music until someone informs them in this ocean of options
