Starting out Bonzo used the heaviest sticks available and would go through three pairs a night. Switched up to medium ones near the end.Rick Beato covers a lot about this topic -- it's not just auto-tune (though that's a huge part of it) but things like the lack of silence in songs, or a place where nothing happens for a few seconds. My fave is in Cream's 'Badge' --
The other thing that has been lost is the change in tempo. The Who's Baba O'Reilly changes tempo at least three times.
Finally, simple musical complexity. This is a cover of Fool in the Rain ... it's fairly simple up to 2:33 when it suddenly takes off and demonstrates why John Bonham was such a great drummer.
and you used to have guys who were studio drummers who would play the songs perfectly and be completely in the pocket for the whole song but then there’d be guys who were concert drummers who didn’t keep consistent time but played the shit out of the song and made it fucking come alive. If we're going to talk about talent versus digit reproduction, remember when drummers needed to have talent before they were made obsolete with Pro Tools?

And now, if you’re lucky, a guy comes in, plays a bar and it just gets looped
