I have read a number of articles that have stated while the Canadian Dollar has gained over 25% against the US Dollar this year, it has only held its own or had very small gains against other major currencies.

If the exchange rate at the beginning of the year is compared to the current exchange rate for other major currencies (and some minor ones that may be of interest to some Perberts) one can see that the Canadian Dollar has made significant gains against almost all other currencies.

............................ 01 Jan 07 ... Today

US Dollar …………......... 0.858 ..... 1.094 ...... Up ... 27.6%
Mexican Peso ............ 9.280 ..... 11.83 ...... Up ... 27.5%
Euro ........................ 0.650 ..... 0.746 ...... Up ... 14.8%
Japanese Yen ............ 102.1 ..... 123.4 ...... Up ... 20.8%
British Pound ............. 0.438 ..... 0.520 ...... Up ... 18.6%
Swiss Franc ............... 1.045 ..... 1.237 ...... Up ... 18.4%
Australian Dollar ........ 1.088 ..... 1.171 ...... Up ... 7.6%
New Zealand Dollar .... 1.219 ..... 1.396 ...... Up ... 14.6%
Russian Rouble .......... 22.58 ..... 26.78 ...... Up ... 18.6%
Chinese Yuan ............. 6.705 ..... 8.131 ...... Up ... 21.3%
Taiwan Dollar ............ 27.95 …... 35.36 ...... Up ... 26.5%
South Korean Wan …... 805.9 ..... 995.0 ...... Up ... 23.5%
Philippine Peso ........... 42.15 ..... 47.49 ...... Up ... 12.7%
Thai Baht .................. 30.83 ..... 34.77 ...... Up ... 12.8%
Iraqi Dinar ................ 1186 ..... 1372 ........ Up ... 15.7%

So as the table shows, the Canadian Dollar is up over 27% against the US Dollar, almost 15% against the Euro, over 18% against the Pound, over 20% against the Yen and over 21% against the Yuan.

Any other currencies of interest to anyone out there?

OK - So I have too much time on my hands at work right now. :D I have to do something to keep myself busy. :)

The Vancouver Sun says the alltime record for the Canuck buck was in 1864 where the Canadian dollar was worth $2.60 US.
I hope we never see that record broken!

Yes, but that was before Confederation and the Canadian Dollar was tied to the British Pound at that time. Also, I read or heard last week that back then currency valuation was calculated differently and based on how currenies are valued today, the +1.10 level that was reached yesterday was effectively an all time high if todays methods had been used back in the 1860s.

Also, isn't if amazing that the US Buck always seems to be low when they are at war. (1860s - Civil War, 1970s - Vietnam War, today - Iraq War).

I think the US dollar will go back up after Bush is gone.

I think there will be much jubilation in the streets after Bush is gone.

It's always amazed me that in the year 2007 we as a "species" have evolved to the point where we still put morons in one of the most powerful positions of power in the world.

You just have to ask yourself - who's the real moron, us for voting him in or Bush?

(and yes I know were Canadians, it's just food for thought)
