What are your favourite movies?
The movies that can evoke a strong emotional response are always the most memorable for me. The macho action flicks can be good for pure entertainment value, but they are rarely memorable.

My favourites:
1) The Road Home
An amazingly beautiful Chinese movie. Almost no action and little dialogue, but some of the most amazing visuals I have even seen in a movie and an incredibly heart-wrenching story. A simple story of love and innocence, yet in this simplicity lies the complexity that is life. The emotions are so strong you will know what the characters are thinking even before they have spoken and you can almost feel what they are feeling in their hearts. Even the toughest most insensitive guys will want to cry because this movie is so incredibly beautiful.

2) Groundhog Day
Unless you have been living in a cave for the last ten years, you’ve probably already seen this movie.

3) Love Actually
Definitely a chick flick, but a very good one. I never get tired of watching Keira Knightly.

Other great movies:
Leon: The Professional, The Last Samurai, Kill Bill, The Butterfly Effect, Ringu

I remember seeing an amazing Chinese movie on CBC late night many years ago called "To Live". Fascinating , epic story of regular family spanning 3 generations.

Would love to find that again.

On the other side of the coin, I really dig "They Live", with Roddy Piper, featuring the longest, most ridiculous fist-fight scene filmed and the line I'm here to chew bubblegum and kick ass, and I'm all out of bubblegum.

Oh, and Princess Bride.

I like some of the Hollywood movies that have a bit of a philosophical bent to them. Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven" is really the modern classic in this regard, IMHO.

The shear number of quotable phrases from that film is realy quite astonishing too. They list a number of them at IMDB.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105695/

(for those that haven't seen it, Little Bill is Gene Hackman, Will Munny is Eastwood, and Ned is Morgan Freeman)

My three favorites, in order, are:

Little Bill Daggett: I don't deserve this... to die like this. I was building a house.
Bill Munny: Deserve's got nothin' to do with it.
[aims gun]
Little Bill Daggett: I'll see you in hell, William Munny.
Bill Munny: Yeah.
[fires]

Bill Munny: Hell of a thing, killin' a man. Take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna have.
The Schofield Kid: Yeah, well, I guess he had it comin'.
Bill Munny: We all got it comin', kid.

Bill Munny: I seen 'em, Ned, I seen the angel of death, he's got snake eyes.
Ned Logan: Who Will, who's got snake eyes?
Bill Munny: It's the angel of death, oh Ned, I'm scared of dyin'.
Ned Logan: Easy, partner, easy.
Bill Munny: I see Claudia too.
Ned Logan: That's good, Will, that's good you saw Claudia, ain't it?
Bill Munny: Her face was all covered with worms, oh Ned I'm scared, I'm dyin'. Don't tell nobody, don't tell my kids, none of the things I done, hear me?
Ned Logan: All right, Will.

This one doesn't really have as much of a philosophical bent to it, but I think it is most people's favorite quote from the film:

Bill Munny: Who's the owner of this shithole?
Skinny Dubois: I, I am. I bought the place from Greeley in '79 and
[Will shoots him]
Little Bill Daggett: You, sir, are a murdering son of a bitch! You just shot an unarmed man!
Bill Munny: He should have armed himself if he was goin' to decorate his establishment with my friend.

On this same topic, I also really like Terence Mallick's "The Thin Red Line". IMHO, this is probably the deepest, most reflective movie to come out of Hollywood in 20 years... maybe ever.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120863/

On IMDB the first review starts this way: "This film is three hours of movie poetry. "Saving Private Ryan," though brilliantly made, is a jingoistic cartoon by comparison."

I strongly agree with that sentiment. Once you get into the film, and see what it is really about, it's like a visual poem... or a meditation on the nature of man. It's just brilliant in my view.

Some of the best lines are:

First Sgt. Edward Welsh (Sean Penn): Property. The whole fucking thing's about property.

Colonel Gordon Tall (Nick Nolte): Look at this jungle. Look at those vines, the way they twine around, swallowing everything. Nature's cruel, Staros.

Private Edward P. Train: [narrating] What is this great evil? How did it steal into the world? From what seed, what root did it spring? Who's doing this? Who's killing us? Robbing us of light and life. Mocking us with the sight of what we might have known.
