As a dog person, I generally take my dog everywhere with me. Small dog, not too tiny, but able to carry around in my hockey bag. I know obviously not to walk dogs in supermarkets/department stores/etc, but not being allowed to carry pets, I personally think that's outrageous.

The reason I mention kids is that the reasons they always give me for not letting me bring my pet along is for sanitary/hygenic reason. Seriously, kids are probably the most filthy beings there are. Sneezing, peeing, barfing, and other disgusting bodily fluids.... surely cleaner than my dog that's not even touching/doing anything...

I can't even bring my dog to the patio to eat!

I'm not those careless owners either that leaves their dogs in the car... unless it's during the fall and it's not even uncomfortable in the vehicle, so I basically have to leave my "Fido" at home and pray that my neighbours don't start complaining that my dog won't shut up.

We all say Vancouver is a pet-friendly place, but I'm starting to think it's more talk and advertising than anything. Or am I just wanting to much?

your mom says hi.
i hear ya to a degree. i think it has to do with free floating hair that is being shed or people's allergies. although they can be loud and rambunctious i'm pretty sure no one is allergic to children.

In Bisbee Arizona, well behaved dogs are allowed in two bars I know of . Everyone was cool about him. In one bar he was ok to be off his leash. He had a great time. No one was offended and most petted him as he went to check them out.

It seems to me that a majority (and no...I didn't say "ALL") pet owners are oblivious to the reality that there are many people who react very badly to pet dander. And no...the pet doesn't have to be there...just the pet having been present in a room at some point in time can lead to ill effects for some allergic people at a later point in time.

Even "hypo-allergenic" pets can give reactions to some people - "hypo" does not mean non-allergenic, yet it seems to me that it is difficult to convince many pet owners of this reality. They simply don't want to hear it.

I understand the connection between owner and pet...its not that I don't empathize. However, allergies can be pure hell at times.

About the allergic thing... wouldn't owners being covered with pet fur be just as bad. If mean, if you just finished taking your mutt to the park and being interactive with your dog, there should be a lot of fur on your clothe. Then walking into a store and there's someone being allergic to animals, won't it just set them off?

Unless the amount that's caught on you is very little compared to the amount that's constantly being released into the air.

At least vancouver dog owners cleanup the shit. or most do.
OH BS ... you don't know how many stupid owners don't bother to pick up their dog's crap out in Yaletown. It's a freakin' minefield out there. Walk by anywhere in Yaletown and look at the grass on the side of the sidewalk. Looks a little burned. Guess what, it's not from fertilizer.

Yaletown yuppie, holier-than-thou pet-fad owners are the most irresponsible citizens of that neighbourhood.

LOL That's because grass is so hard to find in Yaletown that all of the neighborhood dogs end up going on the same little patch of grass. Don't blame the dogs or the owners, blame the dumbasses who decided concrete was the new urban design fad! :D I'm not even kidding... anyone see that horrible horrible *ahem* 'park' at the corner or Nelson & Mainland? I lived in one of the towers there and walked over to Starbucks shaking my head at the pathetic view. Truly pathetic. As in, sad sad very sad. And ugly:
http://pricetags.wordpress.com/2007/04/29/new-yaletown-park-taking-it-hard/

Try to find any grass around there, there's hardly any. Then you wonder why it's yellow? That's why. Cause one little patch of grass and 100 dogs who need to pee and this is what you get. Dogs are not the problem, neither are the owners... who ever had a hate-on for grass and decided concrete was better is the problem. ;) Dumbass.

Fuck I hate Yaletown. Gross. But let's not go there, I'll leave that rant for another day.

Vancouver isn't really a pet friendly place; just ask any pet owner looking for an apartment... Vancouver is the worse when it comes to not allowing tenants with pets. But for everything else, it's all similar no matter where you go when it comes to pet friendliness... it's very poor.

It isn't to say that there are not many many animal lovers out there, but the ones who dislike them, really take it seriously. I come across it all the time, and it's not always because of allergies! My mom is really allergic to cats and has now developed allergies to dogs as well, so I know what it's like. But in cases where there are no allergies involved (most of the situations I've come across had nothing to do with allergies at all), people can be really intolerant when it comes to dogs. Honestly, it pisses me off!

When I'm traveling with my dog, one of the things that annoys me the most is never really being able to go out and eat a meal, sitting down at a restaurant. Since even if I'm sitting on a patio somewhere I'm still not allowed to bring her with me, it means my only option is always to take the food back with me or just have it delivered.

Since I started flying with my dog, I've been saying how unfair it is to have perfectly well behaved dogs have to fly in the very loud baggage compartment below, while the snotty whiny annoying kids sit with us and make our whole flight miserable. I'm telling you, there should be certificates; for kids & dogs.. the ones who pass the test and get their certificates get to sit on the plane with the rest of us, and the ones who are not well behaved get to sit below and leave the rest of us alone! Little kids can't sit down there by themselves, you say? I agree, send their parents to keep them company. They can all work on getting that certificate for the return flight home. :p Here's your incentive to be a parent! :p Get the kid a trainer if you want, but he's not sitting by me unless he's got that certificate! :p OK I'm exaggerating (not as much as you would think, I'm almost 80% serious about this one) but you get my point. Why are we forced to put up with other people's bratty spoiled kids, while our well behaved pets are denied?

I think that in general, a lot of people have way too much time on their hands and like to waste time complaining about non-sense and trying to control what the next person should or shouldn't be doing. Just live and let live, and stop wasting time worrying about what the next guy and his dog is doing. Everyone would enjoy things so much more. I mean, unless you are allergic... what the F do you really care if I take my dog at Shopper's or on the bus with me?? Really? Why does it even matter or concern you?

The truth is that it just doesn't it.............. so in essence; you're wasting my time, as well as yours.
Good job! We all need more of our time wasted! Way to go! There's your certificate. :p

Hilarious!! I'd go for that!
On another note, when living in Germany, it wasn't all that uncommon to see peoples dogs at their owners feet, while dining in the restaurants. Never saw or heard of any of the local's having a problem with it. And the dogs were better behaved than most kids I've seen at restaurants lol.

Couldn't agree with ya more! Whenever I enter a restaurant I quickly scan it looking for clusters of the little bastards (whiny, snot-faced kids, that is). If I see or hear so much as one of those parasites I leave and go elsewhere.

Perhaps you think I speak a tad too harshly? Having recently suffered greatly at the whims of a filthy little terror on the Sydney (Aus.)/Vancouver route (that's 14 hours of unmitigated hell) I would sooner ... sorry, rage just got the better of me. Again. And now I've lost my train of thought.

Oh yes, I would have no problem being seated next to a well-behaved dog or cat. Especially if mommy was hot. Plus the added bonus of the pet being a great conversation starter.

I agree 100% I live right across the street from a park.
Actually it`s an elementary school playground so even worse.

I sit here on my deck all the time, I see dog owners throwing the shit into the trees, down the sewars, I have seen people throw it into the sandbox, where the kids play.

Last thing we need is dogs in the supermarket, whether you walk them in or carry them in.

AND I own a dog

Tell me about it, I used to waitress for quiet a few years and I'll tell you children are terrible! When a table would come in with kids we would fight to try to get the other waitress to take the table. The kids often would throw/spill so much food I would have to vacuum after each table, they would scream and scream and make me and everyone else in the resturant want to rip their ears off. On top of that you only make a lousy dollar tip if your lucky off of the children because their meals are usually dirt cheap. Last summer I remeber serving a table and them having to tie their yorkie up outside of the patio, meanwhile a child sits at a table accross from them, throwing food, screaming, all that good stuff. I thought to myself so it acceptable to have a screaming, messy child that ruins everyones meal, but its not ok to have a tiny dog that sits quietly in the corner. Regardless I understand that if pets were allowed there would be maddness and people bringing in their big hairy slobbery dogs.

A pet peeve...
And my big peeve right now is that drivers have their dogs on their laps while driving..
I now it is summer and dogs love the feel of the cool wind on their face hell so do I but if you have an unrestrained dog in your lag when driving you are an accident waiting to happen...

And have you ever seen an accident with a dog that was sitting on someone lap, or even just lose in the car? I have

Lets just say the "mess" would be enough to scar the owner for life.
I won't describe it, but yeah probably one of the sickest things I have seen.
It was just a regular city accident too, not some high speed headon or anything like that

I'm not sure exactly how that supports your argument...??
So they matter less because they're not people, but only animals?

I have met a lot more bad people than I have bad animals. And I will trust animals before trusting a large number of people.
They will not lie to you, they will not let you down. I'm sorry, I am an animal lover and my animals hold the same level of importance as a family member. They aren't only animals to me, I'm sorry.

I think that is probably where the different opinions about this come from... they are only animals to a lot of people. A disposable thing when it is no longer convenient.

i provide a great environment for them there is no need to take them anywhere.....

I'm sorry but that isn't the point.. My dog has a great environment at home as well but it doesn't mean that sitting there waiting for me for hours, staring at the door, is particularly thrilling for her. Some dogs sit around for 10-12hrs a day while their owner is away at work, but mine has always been used to having me around and I personally have no intention of changing that and leaving her to sit around without anything to do for hours.

I've always chosen to take her with me wherever I go. My friends know this, my family also. Whenever she has not been welcome, I simply choose not to go. (My step mother does not like dogs, so I do not go. My brother's wife is afraid of dogs, so I will visit but I never stay long. It isn't s a need, it's a choice I make. I prefer to have her with me, and if people want to see me, they just have to accept that she's there. Period. Sorry, but the way I see it, she is like my kid, and just like I would never ask anyone to leave their kids at home because I think they're too loud or whatever, I don't think people should ask that of me. Ironically, my mother is allergic AND getting past her fear of dogs since I've had mine, yet she is the only one who welcomes me and my dog! She has a huge screened porch so the dog stays out there and it doesn't cause any allergies. The only reason she's doing this, is because she understands what my dog means to me, and for that reason she's made efforts since the beginning.

Dogs are not people...ok, fine.
But they are not inanimate stuffed animals we can leave in a corner until we decide it might be fun or it's convenient to have them around again either. If you saw my dog when she's in public, on a street with lots of people or at an airport, you would understand how happy it makes her. If I ever decided to leave her at home by herself all day and without any kind of outside stimulation, I can guarantee she just would not be the same. And that's why I choose to take her with me and don't plan on changing that.

I provide a great environment at home for my furniture, what I would like to provide my dog is companionship for both of us. Dogs thrive on the company of their masters and vice versa.

I've seen more young men pissing against the sides of Yaletown buildings than I do see people not picking up dogshit. I've walked through various parts of Yaletown where the stench of piss lingers strong.

The dogs aren't the problem.

"Can't bring dogs (or pets) anywhere!"

Are you kidding me?? I could only wish that were true.
One of the worst things about Vancouver is this self-indulgent mentality that people think they should be able to take their dogs everywhere (and typically DO take their dogs everywhere).

I know you love your dog, but I don't. And I don't want to have to interact with your pet when I go to the post office/ video store/ bank/ etc.

I've lived in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Chicago, Seattle, and spent considerable time in NYC. and NOWHERE else do people even expect that they should take their pets into public places. They just don't. That notion doesn't even occur to them.
That is a uniquely Vancouver thing.

I COULD NOT AGREE MORE with whoever said "pets are not little people.. they are animals!!!!"
That doesn't mean you should not love your pets; it simply means that they DO NOT have the same rights to the public sphere that people do.
Your animals do not belong out in public.

I detest my ex about as much as you guys detest children. For the record, some of us take pride in our children and not all are ungrateful, screaming barfing, ingrates. I live in Edmonton, however, regrdless of where you live, people will take a long time to warm up to the idea of dining with Fido. Just out of curiosity, has no one ever smelled the rank stench of the silent farts that eek out of dogs asses? lol That would kill my dinner instantly

Raina mist you are right on.

Kids are allowed in because they are people.

Dogs are not

and ownes of dogs need to realize that they are no different than any other pet.

Do you want people bringing their snakes they are quieter than kids, maybe a spider or lizard.
