There's been an ongoing debate on this one for many years, are we in a simulation? The idea of earth being a reality TV show has even been a plot on South Park. I cannot remember the name of it for the life of me, but there was also a sci-fi short story positing that earth is actually a vacation planet for long-lived/immortal beings, your vacation from your tedious existence is a vacation on earth and who you end up becoming is either based on how much you pay for the vacation or a random draw. The Tom Brady experience is a premium life, while the poor bugger in Sudan is either the bargain basement package or a really crappy draw. Minds are blanked so that the whole thing seems real, but when you die here, you just resume your previous existence. Another one was that the earth is a farm for an ancient space faring race, seeded millions of years ago and when they get back around this way, they harvest the biological and technological materials for their travels, the dinosaurs a reset when they last came by as the intelligent part of life hadn't developed as planned. There are 100s more I am sure.
There's plenty of discussion that can be had here, all based on the whole metaphysical, how are here, where did we come from and what happens when you die debates. It's mind boggling to think life spontaneously arose and increasingly horrifying to think what other explanations might be. God is just one way we puny humans have tried to put minds at ease as to what happened and what will happen at the end. The only thing that's certain is that you don't really find out until you are dead and that you can drive yourself insane worrying too much about it.
This is a topic I enjoy discussing, as you might be able to tell. Especially after a glass of wine or two.
