Federal election result: it just doesn't make any sense!

Not necessarily correct. Depends on the system. Take a look at how New Zealand does it. There are directly elected MPs representing specific ridings. The proportionality comes from the 'top up' off the party lists.

    Any Rugby World Cup Fans?

The All Blacks are good, but it would be a mistake to underestimate the Wallabies, and I don't think the AB will do that.

Should The West name something in honour of departing Prime Minister Stephen Harper?

Really depends on what it is. Signed a petition this evening to have a landfill named after him. That would be appropriate. An airport... certainly not.

    Liberal Agenda

Same thing can happen in first-past-the-post systems with minority governments. Gridlock, and even in bi-party systems such as what we have to the south. Given that there are way more democracies following proportional representation over first-past-the-post, I find it strange that if it is an...

    Liberal Agenda

It really does depend on the form of proportional representation used, and this is the probable out come from one of a number of possibilities. I think the New Zealand system is interesting, as you get to vote for both a representative as well as the party (mixed-member proportional system)...

Federal election result: it just doesn't make any sense!

So.. you are saying that the 20+% of the population who have those political beliefs don't deserve to have their voice represented in Parliament? That doesn't seem particular Canadian. Freedom of belief and speech is one of the reasons so many servicemen fought and died in anyone of a number of...

Federal election result: it just doesn't make any sense!

Torcat, I think we are both saying that the system needs to change. Proportional representation would see a better level of representation, but it still wouldn't be perfect. But, larger electorates with multiple representatives may be one way to go.

I'm in agreement with you sdw. Thanks for providing additional evidence for the doubters among us. :)

Federal election result: it just doesn't make any sense!

On this basis no government since Mulroney in 1984 has had a mandate to rule, and Mulroney with 50.03% only just did. But, it depends on how you define 'mandate to rule.' If that means the party with the largest number of seats, then there isn't a problem. If you want a party to have more than...

    The fate of Bill C-36

A fairer tax system would result in a progressive system where the wealthy are paying more. And paying welfare for unemployed oilfield workers? That is what EI is for, albeit there has been damage done to that under Herr Harper.

    Liberal Agenda

There are more countries following proportional representation than first-past-the-post, and frequently they are better performing democracies. There are also many different versions of proportional representation, some better than others. I think there is a lot of debate and discussion to be...

Federal election result: it just doesn't make any sense!

From the Liberal platform: "Liberals are committed to exploring Parliamentary and Electoral reform in order to realign our institutions with democratic principles and to ensure more meaningful and effective representation" Their commitment is to explore it. It will be interesting how far they...

    Liberals win

Take a look at your history of the industrial revolution and the workhouses in Great Britain. You think that is a better alternative? The reality is that when you have a moderate redistribution of income, you have a much happier and safer society. Part of the economic stagnation in recent...

Federal election result: it just doesn't make any sense!

Not correct in this instance. Terry Beech received 18,742 votes Carol Baird Ellen and Lynne Quarmby together gained 17,920 votes. So even if all of the Green Party voters voted NDP, it would not have been enough for NDP. Interesting result, though, as the polls I'd seen had Beech running in 3rd...

    Any Rugby World Cup Fans?

Yeah, it is too bad that Japan didn't go forward. So, the All Blacks have trounced the French 62-13. And South Africa v. Wales was much closer at 23-19. All Blacks v. Springboks next Saturday... and I'll be on a beach somewhere in Asia...

Do you believe polls showing a win for trudeau liberals?

From what I have been reading about polling, it sounds like it has become increasingly challenging for the polling firms to get a sample they can be confident is a truly representative of likely voters in the coming election. Phone polls are becoming increasingly skewed as people drop their...
