Fairly basic, but surprisingly hard to find.

My friend is a server and she had this rule for tipping. If anything is self serve you don't tip. For example this vietnamese restaurant in richmond made you walk to the back of the room to fill up your own dinky glass. Or if its self serve ordering where you go to a counter like Heritage Asian Eatery by burrard station. She said in order to tip, they have to seat you and take your order, fill up water, and check on you at least once. If you have to get your own water or order your own food and bring it then no tip. Only tip for table service. Or leave a buck or two when doing takeout. I abide by this.

server: "sorry one moment just having an issue with the card machine" customer: "oh is it free then? huehuehue"
I started making up my own.
customer: "do you have a washroom?" me: "no, sorry, you have to go out in the street"
*restaurant is empty* customer: "do you have any tables available?" me: "no sorry, as you can see we're very busy. it's about a 40 minute wait."
Like truly, can you imagine me as your server? HAHAHA. PURE SASS. It was a lot of fun sometimes.

I want to know what’s really good on the menu. I want my server to let me in on a little secret. If they are not excited about something on the menu, I am not excited about the restaurant.

and the server does NOT say, "Do you want change?" Highly unprofessional, might as well say, "Are you gonna tip me?"

If the menu is massive and has everything from burgers to Chinese to Mexican, it's probably all pretty bad.
Well I think you have to pay the bill, no matter what. What comes after that, is your choice. But bet on the side of caution, leave a tip. The better the service the better the tip should apply. But really if the staff is just doing their jobs, how do you determine that. I sorry to say that "big tits" get a bigger tip from me, especially if they float them near your head, or reach in and brush up against you.... it fucken works....

Server should just bring the change and I will decide the size of the tip.
Many servers are rocking cleavage and that helps their cause.
I’m forever wearing white shirts…That being said, treat your servers as you would like to be treated. 99% of the time this results in awesome service and the occasional complimentary dish or drink for me.
