A cargo container that apparently fell from a ship washed up on the Outer Banks of North Carolina on Thursday and spilled thousands of bags of Doritos brand tortilla chips on the beach. People collected the chips, which were apparently still fresh due to their airtight packaging. It was unknown which ship had lost the cargo or to what port it was bound.

Two things that trouble me

Why are we exporting spork? Don't foreign countries have their own local garbage to eat?

If true, fucking great! Intermodal containers are serialized and should be tracked better then a fricking fedex envelope so if they don't know where this one was from or where it was going be afraid.

I was thinking the same thing... not good!

I copied and pasted the article that was with the pictures and that's what it said... so either it's true or the reporter is talking out of his/her ass.

My buddy works for Swire (a major shipping co) and he assumes a loss rate of 2-3% for container shipping. That's a lot of doritos in the drink His lack of concern gave me pause when I was shipping my life back to Canada in 40 container, but I can see how a large manufacturer and shipper simply factor the loss as a cost of doing business.

Those were actualy re-call bags going back to the factory. Sadly my used rubber collection fell in the corn flour grinder. Oh well shit happens!!!

I've seen similar stats as highsticking, but the actual loss rate is mostly based off of piracy. That is out of a 3% loss rate, 1 % disappears due to storms knocking containers off of a ships deck, but apparently 2% of all shipping containers are lost in the high seas due to piracy. Amazing concept in this day and age...maybe I should buy a boat, enlist a crew of perbites and hot ladies, and sail the southern seas doing crime and nailing chicks!! Any takers?
