When I wear high-quality brown shoes with a high-end dark suit, here is what happens:

- the Walmart crowd, blue-collar types who work hard for their paycheck and vacation at Vermillion Provincial Park, tell me I am supposed to wear black shoes with a suit;

- the Ruth's Chris crowd, well-travelled professional types who drive German cars and vacation in Europe or Asia, tell me my shoes look great and ask me where I got them.

That's how it breaks down, like it or not.
Here, here!

It couldn't be better said.

Spermie,
The reason you are so defensive about that photo is because it is you. :)

But seriously I wouldv'e have picked those socks, they only look pink because of the light. Look at the lower of the two feet. It matches just fine and is not pink. Probably wouldn't have worn that exact tie personally, but yes, you are correct it does work, and I would wear something similar in contrast.

I think you guys would have liked it better if he was standing, wouldn't have seen those socks in an unflattering light or his tie sticking out the bottom. Sitting pictures are not always flattering.

What can you expect when Spermie doesn't have proper lighting in his living room and had to take his own picture with a timer?

That being said, I like the suit to, and heaven forbid you wear ANY black shoes with that suit.

The easiest way is not always the best way ...

If I may ...(smiles politely)

Black is black. Black is versatile and abundant. Black can be bought in any corner shoe mart/superstore/mega outlet/factory/warehouse (perhaps even Canadian Tire ...just saying.) Black shoes (like everything) come in a range of qualities and the more important issue is the original quality of the shoe. If it's a cheap black shoe it will show as a cheap black shoe and no matter what you do with the rest of the outfit the shoes will lower the overall standard of what you have put together. A pair of high-end black shoes stands out in a crowd of average or less than average quality shoes. There is no mistaking a pair of fine black shoes exquisitely and precisely made by experts to be purchased by a discriminating client.

It is not that black is not good, it is not that black does not work with most suits, casual wear, business attire or formal wear. Black works well with almost everything. MOST people know that. The question I have is; do you want to be MOST people? Perhaps you do and that is absolutely fine in my books. I would never judge anyone by the color of his shoes ** I will however judge a person by the condition of his shoes. Blame my father who raised me to always make eye contact while shaking hands while subtly looking down at the footwear to find out who you are really about to deal with}

Brown shoes, on the other hand, are more elusive to find in a quality one would be proud to wear. A brown shoe of quality manufacture is not something shoe; world/mart/factory/outlet will carry. If you find a pair of brown shoes at a low end outlet I strongly suggest you leave them on the shelf where they sit in two's because apparently even the business owners don't mind if they are walked out in without being paid for.

As for the piecing together of the entire ensemble which would be perfectly finished off by a high end pair of brown shoes ....that takes some thought and genuine fashion insight. I believe this is precisely where the stuttering comes in, the hesitation to go the extra mile for fashion, the desire to work a little bit harder than MOST people when it comes to a presenting an exceptional look. In addition to the extra effort required to finish off the perfect outfit with a pair of exceptional brown shoes, you may need to spend some extra time shopping at a retail location which still insists they keep one of the pair away from greedy fingers (or toes) with the knowledge that they are simply worth more and do not want to risk a pair walking out the door unpaid for.

Brown shoes, quality brown shoes, can top off (bottom out) the perfect look if done with care. I believe the easiest way 'out' for most is to stick to black for fear of not quite getting everything put together correctly from tip to toe. A gent in a tailored suit or casual wear with the perfectly chosen pair of quality brown shoes will catch my eye and my attention over someone wearing an ensemble finished off with an average or even high end pair of black shoes. Why? It shows effort. I enjoy knowing a man has put as much effort into his appearance as women are expected to. Why be average? Make an effort to stand out and you will be noticed.

Ya ya, I know, i couldn't find the right pics.. but his pecs were pretty nice.. ;)

:)
I think the way it works best is when the actual depth of tone is the same.. a darker brown with darker, medium with a medium toned, lighter with lighter shades...
it makes sense.

and yes indeed.. this is a funny thread.. :)

I am thinking...it's just the lighting. Proper lighting highlights a myriad of flaws. (spoken like a true black shoe rube)

Bad Santa you naughty naughty man. One might think you are only changing your opinion to win somebunny's attention...Oui?;) Santa, you've got my attention.
...So, I have to wonder, should I see you again, will you wear brown shoes or black? (oh who am I kidding ...you could wear pointy green elf boots and still turn me on ...thump thump thump)

Sperminator you are adorable ...may I please keep you? As promised my token of appreciation appears for you now. If you have any troubles locating it, please feel free to contact me ...or for any other reason of course ;) I hope you enjoy.

Black shoes have to be cut well in order to show the foot in a flattering way...I looked forever for a pair of black boots that had impact without being gaudy. That had a heel with a statement without looking either matronly or slutty...I still have not found shoes...but I did find one pair of boots.

I have three pairs of brown leather boots...they always attract attention and envy...although I am undecided, black can look a bit harsh with grey pinstripe...brown can add warmth...Burgundy is the best!!! A soft burgundy shoe goes with everything.

Brown shoes, if cut from good quality leather, look good enough to eat...I love the way they wear; the changes in colour as they age.

Cheap shoes are made from cheap hides and they do not feel good....shoe leather should be soft and supple.

I am in a lot of pain right now so this might sound a bit disjointed...pulled a back muscle gardening.

I have absolutely no doubt that you derive great physical pleasure from storing your shoes in a very personal place where the sun don't shine... hence your oft-stated preference for the colour brown.

*sigh* - there go my rep points...

The only problem is finding the matching belt. I have bought brown shoes from Rosen's and was lucky enough to find a belt in the same colour. Now what about wine or burgundy shoes???

I've had that problem too. I've sometimes just ended up bringing a shoe with me into a store to compare.

Ah! Autumn! My favourite fashion time of the year...now I can pull out the leather boots, the pure wool sweaters, the pleated skirts...hhhhaaahhh!

I picked up the coolest brown leather suitcase..the hinges and clasps are on little cogs so it can expand as you add clothes...it is made in England and the interior is immaculate...I love vintage suitcases.

I wish I was smart enough to take a picture and post it....

The belt should match the shoes or be very, very different...personally, I find navy the hardest fabric to match...if the skirt is just a bit off from the shade of the jacket then it just screams "wrong" or I guess "fail" is the modern term...

I know what you're going to say, another dumb ass poll by Bad Santa. Heaven help us!

Well 'ole South Pole pretty much runs my life so I definitely pay attention to polls!

But I have a pet peeve with the Great "Sperminator."

He has this crazy idea that brown shoes go with anything. I don't agree! Black is a much more agreeable color and matches with just about any color suit you can wear.

The only thing brown matches is dog shit so if you're steppin' in it a lot, your brown shoes would match something.

Sorry, Spermie but this issue is as dear to my heart as it seems to be to yours!

I'd really like to know what all you exceedingly erudite Perberts think about this.

Brown shoes or Black shoes??
