I know what you're going to say, another dumb ass poll by Bad Santa. Heaven help us!

Well 'ole South Pole pretty much runs my life so I definitely pay attention to polls!

But I have a pet peeve with the Great "Sperminator."

He has this crazy idea that brown shoes go with anything. I don't agree! Black is a much more agreeable color and matches with just about any color suit you can wear.

The only thing brown matches is dog shit so if you're steppin' in it a lot, your brown shoes would match something.

Sorry, Spermie but this issue is as dear to my heart as it seems to be to yours!

I'd really like to know what all you exceedingly erudite Perberts think about this.

Brown shoes or Black shoes??

I have not yet figured out (or really had the inclination/time to figure out) how to add quotes from previous posts so I can speak directly to them, however I do know suits/shoes, and no, I not gay (LOL).

Here's my two cents:

Most guys really have no idea how to dress themselves when it comes to business or formal attire. Yes, brown shoes do go with everything and look especially sharp with a blue, light grey or summer weight suits as well as with a blazer (black or brown). However, they are a bit less formal and send a more laid back, relaxed message which is fine for everyday use. Black shoes are much more formal/classy. If you are closing a big deal, it's a formal occasion, or you need to dress to impress, always go black.

Here's where guys always screw it up. You cannot buy your shoes at Aldo, Sears, any place on Robson, et cetera if you want to be taken seriously. If you are going to wear dress shoes you have to suck it up and drop big $. A good pair of dress shoes will last you many, many years as long as you take care of them which means investing in a cedar shoe tree for each pair of shoes. The cedar will ensure no moisture or odour lingers in the shoes while it is being stored and will prolong the life of the shoes. Stay away from the fads and brands that go to the extreme (Prada) because they will last for a year or two and then sit in your closet . The classic looks have been around for decades and will continue to be around for many more. Always choose a shoe with a leather sole. Rubber and/or chunky soles have no business to worn with suits. A good pair of shoes will run you anywhere from $500 to $1000. A great bet is Canali; it's Italian made, fashionable, extremely well made and will look good for a long time.

As with suits do not skimp; go for quality over quantity even if it means you can only afford to buy one pair of each.

I'm not an expert, but I read in GQ where they said the shoes must match the belt. Given that shoes usually come in brown or black, and belts usually come in brown or black, they are probably telling the truth.

You didn't say what colour the suit was......If I'm wearing a grey pinstripe for example I wear black but a beige pinstripe I go brown.

You match your shoes & Belt

IF the suit is Black then you should wear black shoes.

Grey - as in the above example, can be paired with brown but note the style of brown.
It has dark tone in with lighter 'buffed' & is a high polish shoe.

A flat medium brown wouldn't work.

If you are in a nice suit you should be wearing high polish - patent leather shoes.

It's not that friken difficult really.

Check out the men's clothing section under men's style. All the shoe porn one will ever need.

BTW, brown works more often than you might think......

When I wear high-quality brown shoes with a high-end dark suit, here is what happens:

- the Walmart crowd, blue-collar types who work hard for their paycheck and vacation at Vermillion Provincial Park, tell me I am supposed to wear black shoes with a suit;

- the Ruth's Chris crowd, well-travelled professional types who drive German cars and vacation in Europe or Asia, tell me my shoes look great and ask me where I got them.

That's how it breaks down, like it or not.
