Prostitution in a socialist state

This news story did get me thinking of prostitution in a socialist society.

My instant reaction was "in a pure socialist system the German nutcase would be right, his needs would have to be met".

My instant though to my first one was "Those poor over worked socialist prostitutes."

But then I realized how wrong I was. In a socialist system, there would be no prostitutes. Prostitutes only exist because their needs aren't being met. In a socialist system a prostitute's material needs would be met. So there would be no prostitutes.

Now that my two brain cells had warmed up I thought some more. This does show off the problem with socialist theory, as it totally disregards human nature. Canada is a socialist state. We give out welfare. In theory there should be no need for prostitution if prostitution only existed to meet material needs of the prostitute. It's human to want more, to improve our status in the world. And thus in Canada there are prostitutes.

So I sit here questioning: in a pure socialist state, where the economic rule is "from each according to his abilities," and giving "to each according to his needs" would prostitution exist?

Hmmmmm maybe prostitutes exist because they like the job. Maybe thier sexual needs are not being met, so they become prostitutes. Maybe, just maybe for some it is not just about material needs;)

My thought is - yes.

As long as there is disposable income persons of the state have the choice where to spend their money. Therefore men could choose to spend their additional funds on a TV, or an SP. A demand for services would undoubtedly create a supply - even though SP's would not have any "need" their is still a human desire to want more (greed if you will) and if there were a demand for services I suspect a supply would be created. I don't think that SP's would be "only" SP's (at least I would certainly hope not) as that would suggest that her only ability was to provide services (and thus devalue her as a human being), but I suspect SP's would work outside their "abilities" to further meet their needs/wants/desires.

Now as to whether the state would pay for an SP is a difficult question...

What the hell do I know? Hmm, Vodka and diet coke do go well together...Busy killing brain cells on the Wet Coast...

Maybe SpinVic, but I bet the money has a little something to do with it for some/most (?) SP's

Are you saying that any of the SP couldn't walk into any bar and find someone to have sex with them for free?

I'm sure most SP do enjoy sex but if they wanted sex there are far more convenient ways to get it.

Prostitution is a business. Gaining wealth is the primary reason for it.
