I hate to admit this...

but I actually agree with Hubba when it comes to women's hockey...

in it's present state of evolution it is an absolute farce...

first Canada over Slovakia 18 - 0...

and now the US is on their way to a 15 - 0 win...

if not for the Chinese goaltender it would have been at least 10 - 0 after the first period...

and I only watched about 5 minutes...

sorry the US scored three more goals while I posted this...

the funny part is Canada and the US celebrate the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th goals like it's the Stanley Cup winner in OT...

what next, seal clubbing as a medal sport in the Olympics...

Didn't the Canadian womens team play a bunch of games against some junior mens team and either barely won or lost? An Olympic caliber team, but loses against an amatuer junior team.

They should reduce the number of games so that it skips straight to the finals.

If it werent for Sweden taking the silver last time, I think this would have been it for ladies hockey.
Its a 2 horse race and thats it.

I can't imagine a stadium full of people watching an 18-0 game.
They say its cause goal differential is a tie breaker or whatever.
But even if they don't run up the score, then what?
Just pass it around? Thats even more boring.

Its just a huge talent differential.
I don't think the Canucks could beat a WHL team 18-0

It is nice to win, but it's a meaningless medal in a two horse race. Maybe take it off for a few years until the other countries catch up a little..or reduce the tournament to get it over and done with sooner.

Several points of interest here:

1} 18-0 is nothing. These same Slovakians beat Bulgaria 82-0.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGh6-CzKT-A

"Amazing but true fact: on their road to Vancouver, the Slovaks beat Bulgaria 82-0 in September 2008 in the Olympic Pre-Qualification tournament in Latvia."

2} China actually scored a goal on the USA & lost only 10-1.

3} I read this about the Chinese team:

"The problem with this thinking is that the Chinese are leaps and bounds better than the Slovaks. What I do know about the Chinese is that in preparation for the Olympics they played a series of exibition games against the Ontario Womens Hockey League sporting a 15-5-1 record which is respectable."

The only "Key Point" there is lenny is.....USA and Canada are the only 2 good teams in the world and it will take a long time before the rest of the world catches up. It will happen one day, just not right now. Beating a team 18-0 and cheering each goal like you just won the Stanley Cup is a little offside too, how about a little sportsmanship? I personally don't like to see anyone disrespected or embarassed and that is exactly what Canada did in my opinion.

I am sorry, but I get no enjoyment from watching one team beating another by 18-0 or 16-0 in hockey no matter who it is. When I played hockey I was on the wrong end of those scores several times. To think the other team gets any enjoyment out of beating a team that bad is sadistic.

If i were the Canadian coach i'd tell them to play keep away, dump & chase,
sit back & wait for them to cum, don't shoot or try to score but protect the
shutout after it got to about 8-0. A slaughter might not only embarass the
opponent but set the Canadian team up for payback in the future.

I may be wrong but goals for and against might be a factor in running up the score, Not much different than the old days when the Soviets played lower teams

I think they did say goals scored would play a factor, but in what case? A tie breaker in the standing? If it's a two horse race, what are the chances of needing a tiebreaker.

I've been on the receiving end of a 12 nothing thumping, believe me, we were all pissed and wanted to just walk off (that or get into fights) when they were trying to set each other up for hat tricks. We were obviously outmatched, no point in trying to embarrass us as well.

Y'know what they should do, when the score gets up to 10 nothing, the Canadian coach should say each member on the ice has to touch the puck at least once before they try to score again. Work on passes and keep away type moves.

But does that make it more exciting?
I dont want to watch them pass the puck around either. Its just as boring.
Maybe a mercy rule, for goal differential once you hit 8, the games over?

But it would be best to remove it from the olympics.
Have the world championship each year, and if more than 2 teams become competitive.
Reintroduce it to the olympics at that time.

But it is a freebie medal for Canada

Since when is it the problem for the Canadian women that the other teams are so bad? Why should they get punished for that and not get a medal? If the other teams have a problem to get beaten by a large margin, then they should take some holidays instead of going to the Olympics.

When men's ice hockey and the winter olympics were introduced, Canada used to dominate games. They'd win by 27-1 or 35-0.
(Ice hockey was first introduced in the summer olympics 1920, when the winter olympics didn't exist yet). From the mid 1920s to the mid 1950s, Canada won the gold at every winter olympics (except 1936, won by Great Britain, a team loaded with former Canadians).

It took time for other countries to develop their hockey programs. In 1956, the Soviet Union skated on the olympic rink, and they dominated for the next 35 years.

Today, while it's still a contest between about 5 of countries and few also-rans.... but it's not the case where the outcome can be easily predicted.

The women's program will take also take time to develop, but it will. Until then, we have to sit through a lot of lop-sided contests. Just like it was 80 years ago with the men.

I think that it might be a matter of time before the IOC remove Women's hockey from the Olympic. I mean... didn't they remove Baseball, Softball, Football (American/Australian) because the competition was almost non-existent?

a decent team of 15 year-old boys would probably beat either the Canadian or US women's teams quite handily...

just as an aside, former player Cassie Campbell on Hockey Night in Canada is nauseating:cool:...

Ok some of you are missing the point about the Olympics. It's not only about you the fans, but it is about the sports, the athletes. In this case, just think of the Olympics as the big event that brings more girls to that sport.

In a tournament setting there as to be some way to figure out what happens when teams have the same results, and often it's the result between those 2 teams that is used, if they have not played it's goal diff, which is why teams run up the score. In youth sports, at various tournaments, after a 7 goal difference, the game stops. But these tournaments are not round robin events like the Olympics, they are normally a 2-3 day tournament.

I love athletic chicks, and while I don't like to see the score run up like that, I can tell you the ladies hockey teams that loose to Canada or the US, had a blast doing so and are not as depressed as some of you. Right now the IOC is in a big push to get women more involved in sport around the world, it has been going on for a while, so if that is what it takes for a few Olympics, that is what will happen.

I think some of you may need to know what the Olympic movement is about.
