hey everyone, i got this phone call from someone claiming to be from the census bureau. the guy calls my house at 7 oclock, the listing on call display is out of Manitoba.

he tells me our phone call is being recorded by a supervisor for quality control and proceeds me to ask DOZENS of questions. everything from my ethnic background, weather or not I graduated from high school, my post secondary education, my medical history, my computer habits, my drug and alcohol consumption, my marital status, and so on and so on.

has anyone ever recieved any phone calls like this?

i may be stereotyping here, but i always figured government workers never worked past 4 in the afternoon. this guy's calling my house at 7 oclock my time, which makes it after 9 in manitoba?

i call back the number after he's done (i didn't give him much information) and the line is always busy.

so the question is. are the feds going to bust down my door sometime soon and haul me away for something?

Stats Canada also called me a while back and asked me similar questions. And yes they call past regular work hours. They must be getting overtime hours for this.

Did you complete and return the recent census? Which we're apparently obligated to do so. If you didn't return it then I'd say they're just crossing you off their list. If you did I'd be a bit more concerned some one's trying to scam personal info.

Doesn't sound too untoward

Not exactly like that but similar.

Doesn't mean much. One, it could be being conducted on behalf of stats Canada by a private firm where they don't have to deal with the archaic CUPE contracts. Two it could be done by stats Canada employees who are getting paid tripple overtime plus an hourly reach-a-round for working after 4:00. Three, given they way they can route calls the person on the other end of the line may not have even been in Canada and just us MTS as their local POP.

Call your local telephone company's security department and give them the number, explain the situation and ask them to verify it came from a legit gov't agency.

It's been a number of years but my wife worked as a temp census worker and the hours were usually late in the evening when the chance of residents were at home. I don't think census takers are what you would call 'government workers' keeping regular hour jobs. Back then, she had to do that door to door and it was really shitty work. However, with the age of technology, I would not be surprised that they have stopped going door to door and are now doing this by phone. Not everyone gets the one on one treatment but I think this is normal.

They called me but they didn't ask me anything about medical history (none of their fucking business anyway), computer habits (again none of their fucking business), or drug and drinking habits (once again none of their fucking business).

You think that's weird, how about this?

You think that's weird, how about this?

It was last year on Christmas Night around 10pm, this Chinese girl with a 'Fresh of the boat' accent called and said she's from The Canadian Cancer Foundation asking for monetary donations. I said to her, "your calling at 10pm on a Christmas Day, you're kiding me right?". She hung up

I called The Cancer foundation and they said they don't do calls on Christmas Day. Can you say scam????

Most likely this is a scam. Those type of questions didn't appear on my census. It might be someone/ group gathering personal information about you.

Why answer the questions - i just hang up. Even if it's legit, why would you want something like that recorded somewhere, just waiting for it to be misplaced.
