Depends, is she a website professional or just a hobbiest? (website hobbiest not a pooner hobbiest (=)

If she isn't asking for anything then whatever you are comfortable with is fine. Even a nice gift is worth it. You can find out how long she is going to spend on your website and gauge the price/gift that way.

A nice bottle of wine perhaps...even a nice dinner somewhere. These are great substitutes to the whole cash thing.

50 bux/page would be considered a bargain.

Okay, for a basic commercial website with approx 10 pages your looking at around 1000-1500 dollars. If you start adding any bells and whistles such as java, flash, etc then the price will increase accordingly.

Most places charge per page...some do an hourly rate.

Now these are professional web design rates for commercial websites. They are designed to market your product/service and to get good hits on search engines (this could cost extra depending on the company).

It really depends on how much time she spends building. Nowadays it could take less than an hour to build one if you're using a wysiwyg (what you see is what you get) program like Frontpage. But like others said, if she adds Flash, java, javascript, asp, etc, then that would take a bit more time and effort. The best you can do is provide her with all of the things you want on the page...ie pictures, rates, links, bio, and so forth.

A nice dinner out should take care of a simple site.
$150 to $300 if she uses scripts (and not just cut n' paste).
$300 to $500 if she makes a neat Flash animation.
$500+ if she uses something like sql or asp languages.

These rates are probably considered cheap by today's standards.

I highly recommend you to visit some competitors' sites and pick and choose the functions or layout you want on yours.

Also, if you put an r-rated site on yahoo, there's a good chance that it might get pulled off. I could be wrong though. It's just much better to register your own domain and hosting. Of course this depends on how much exposure you are looking for.

Good luck!!

My pleasure Leilani and ill take all the hugs I can get. *hugs*

Okay...without me seeing atleast 2-3 examples of this persons work I offer this off the cuff price range.

20-25 per page

30 minute planning session another 20-25.

This is just 5 pages of straight text and pics provided by the client with absolutely no extras (this price does not include possible banner creation for use on other sites). I would recommend atleast a 30 minute planning session with the designer so you are both on the same page as it were (no pun intended). The more extras the longer the planning session. Will the site have a schedule that YOU can update yourself? That would be a little extra in cost but probably well worth it.

These prices are based on a non professional website designer (someone who is kinda doing this on the side and doesn't have alot of experience/training).

There are also maintenance and upgrade fees but I need to get back to work so ill talk about them later.
----

Now I am basing these prices on what I MIGHT charge. I usually don't like putting prices on other peoples work.

quality comes at a price.

Professionally done web pages can exceed $500 to $10,000 depending on what the page looks like and what it is supposed to do.

Remember hours needed to design and program, creative talent and intricacy of the interactivity (does it do e-commerce, or have some kind a feedback response system) will cost more.

Just as everything in life, you get what you pay for.

Perhaps calling one of the professional web design companies for a quote will give you a good baseline for what is fair.

Everybody under the sun has an opinion of what a website is worth but the professional companies will give you a first class product and their rates are reflective of what the market will pay.
