So I'm DT the other night and pulling outta the alley after a botched approach, and I see in the alley across the street this guy with his hood up and I supose a dead battery.

As I approach the street to tun outta the alley he's crossed the street and sure enough he asks for a jump. I say I have no cables. He does. I then tell it like it is, or atleast how I see shit. I have a relatively brand new car and the last thing I want is a fukked up electrical system because I jumped somones old POS vehicle.

If you vehicle is a "older" car or your just a scatter brained fukk that leaves your lights on all the time there is no excuse to not have BCAA or for crap sakes you can buy power packs at Crappy Tire for $100 or less for just such scenarios as buddies.

A friend of mines wife gave a jump to someone and then she went in the store. Came back and the car ran like crap. Did something to the computer in her car and had to buy a a new computer. I believe it was to the tune of $600.00 US. You did the right thing.

Exactly. And while buddie drives off all fine and good the wife stands there with her dick in her hand wondering why her vehicle now runs like crap.

your mom says hi.
sounds like a pretty greedy, self absorbed conclusion to me.

i mean no offense i guess you had your reasons and all, i just hope you never find yourself in a situation where someone can make your day with a simple gesture or action.

with most of those responses above its no wonder why our society is degenerating the way it is. yet many of you are so quick to point the finger at others. how bout a little common decency towards eachother. this "every man for himself" attitude is what prevails in the u.s. and what many of you here preach. with attitudes like this its not too hard to see why the country i grew up in and loved as a child has become what it is.

well he obviously feels a bit guilty about not helping a fellow human being otherwise he wouldn't be on a forum looking for the approval of those actions that all of you are giving him.

Sorry I just don't believe in the "do unto others at your own expense" thing in this situation. Say it was $600, that's 30+ hummers for you! You did the right thing.

totally the right thing

say what you like about helping out your fellow man, but in a case like that you gotta keep riding. i keep one of those portable battery packs in my truck so i have no reason to worry about frying my electrical system, and if the dood was in a mall parking lot or outside his house id give him a hand. its not a matter of fucking up my car, its a matter of keeping all my vital organs intact. plus ive seen more than enough movies and tv shows to see that when someone's hovering over a stalled car in a dark alley it usually means its a set up for an ambush or something

It's apparent from the initial post that you are absolutely torn up about this decision and likely losing sleep about whether or not you did the right thing, Hitrack.  I hope all these assurances have made you understand that you did indeed do the right thing and therefore you don't need to trouble your head any further about it.

Sounds like Smackyo would have helped at the risk of fukking up his vehicles electrical system, because it can happen wether the cables are hooked up right or not. just like with westwoodys 84 vette. Besides by the time I did another 2 laps he was gone.

Wasn't looking for approval or losing sleep over the matter, it was just a little story to throw in your 2ø about.

It's a tough call, but I probably wouldn't have just driven away. I've turned down help because the situation felt wrong, but always offerred to phone a friend or garage if they wanted help.

Don't forget this is also a nice scam for stealing cars ... you get out to help the dude and someone rolls off with your ride ... instinct is to run after your ride so dude slams hood on his and takes off the other way.

I might help a neighbour, but some dude in a dark alley? yeah right!

Couple things...

Ok I read the whole thread...

1. I agree that it could have appeared suspicious. Normally, I would always lend a boost. In this case, somebody pointed out it could have been a "setup" and I guess hitrack was the only person there that could have judged the situation for himself.

2. I'm a bit surprised at the scrambling of the electrical system issues people have brought up... I've honestly never heard of this happening if the cables are connected properly. If you are that worried, I think the best thing to do is shut the donor car off and disconnect the car cables from the donor car's battery... hook up the jumper cables to the car that needs to be jumped to the "isolated" donor battery... the donor battery should easily be able to do "2 starts" without dying so there is little to no risk of the donor battery dying... all this assumes that the CCA requirements for both vehicles is similar... which it should be in 90% of the cases.

now, if the cars are of greatly different size with greatly varying cold cranking amp requirements, perhaps that is what caused the electrical issues. Maybe the friends wife had a small grocery getter and used it to jump start some honking hummer type vehicle. If the battery in the smaller car is not up to task, then the whole electrical system is strained... and that is when I can see potential problems happening.

Thanks Buddy. I should have figured that one out. The AM threw me off for some reason. If he said I WAS DT, it would have hit me.

This has nothing to do with greed or a self absorbed attitude (which btw I agree is a HUGE problem in society these days) because the owner's manual that came with my previous car even warned about the very same topic.

You can still help in other ways like offering to make a call for the person if they are in the middle of nowhere for example. If you feel comfortable, you can even give them a ride. Not sure anyone here is suggesting don't help. They are saying don't boost him, at least that is what I am saying.
