Two men found guilty of manslaughter in beheading death

Amritpal Dhillon, Amritpaul Rakhra convicted in 2013 samurai sword slaying of Manraj Akalirai

Amrit Rakhra(left) and Amrit Dhillon (right) were found guilty of manslaughter in the beheading death of Manraj Akalirai, 19, in Vancouver in 2013.
By Keith Fraser, The Province November 28, 2015 6:04 PM

A man accused of using a samurai sword to nearly decapitate a Vancouver teen has been found guilty of manslaughter.

After five days of deliberations, the jury found Amritpal Dhillon, who pleaded not guilty to the January 2013 slaying of Manraj Akalirai, 19, not guilty of second-degree murder, but guilty of manslaughter.

Amritpaul Rakhra, a co-accused of Dhillon, was also found guilty of manslaughter in the gruesome death. He was alleged to have used a golf club to beat up Akalirai following a confrontation between two groups of young men in a residential neighbourhood in East Vancouver.

According to one witness, the fight was sparked by a “hood beef” — a neighbourhood dispute between the two groups.

A man who can only be identified as Witness X claimed that there was a “back and forth” dispute involving the breaking of car windows and slashing of vehicle tires.

Witness X, the Crown’s key witness, testified that on the night of the slaying, he and Akalirai had been preparing to go out to eat.

When Akalirai reported that someone was circling the neighbourhood, Witness X decided to arm himself with the samurai sword and a machete.

As the two men were pulling out to go get something to eat, two vehicles suddenly blocked their path, he testified.

Witness X got out of their vehicle with the sword and confronted a man wielding a golf club.

During the ensuing battle, Witness X used the sword to cut off the thumb of the other man.

When the golf club clashed with the sword, Witness X said he dropped the sword and ran.

Akalirai followed him to a nearby front yard on Elgin Street, with the two accused chasing them.

Witness X told the jury that Rakhra struck his friend first with the golf club, knocking him to the ground. He said Dhillon, who had picked up the sword, followed up with a swing of the weapon that took off most of the top of Akalirai’s head.

Dhillon took the stand and told a very different version of events. He told the jury that following the confrontation, he had picked up a sheath from the sword that had been discarded by Witness X.

He said Witness X, still armed with the samurai sword, followed him into a nearby yard and swung the sword at his neck. He said he was able to deflect the blow with the sheath, the blow knocking the sword from Witness X’s hands.

Shortly thereafter, Dhillon said he picked up the sword and was confronted by Akalirai in the front yard.

When Akalirai lunged at him, Dhillon said he swung the sword once, fearing for his life.

In his closing submissions, Crown counsel Brendan McCabe argued that the single blow that nearly cut off Akalirai’s head was evidence of the intention of the accused to commit murder.

The trial, heard in one of B.C.’s biggest courtrooms, most days was packed with family and friends of the victim and the accused. The case returns to court on Dec. 9 to set a date for the sentencing hearing.

Wow... even based on the photo it doesn't surprise me at all that these douche bags are capable of such heinous acts. I really feel for the people who have to deal with these ass wipes.

yeah... descendants of immigrants :deadhorse:
what does that have to do with this? These kids were born and raised here, got involved with stupidness, I've seen these kids around the block a few times and could tell that all of them were up to no good, being children of immigrants doesn't even cut close to the reasoning of this.

I wouldn't be one of those you consider "smug ultra liberals", would I?
My only comment to the post is, "aren't we all?'. Even the ancestors of the First Nations/Inuit/Metis arguably, based on some anthropological evidence, were immigrants at some point.
Enough "shit" from me for one night ;)

I've got this thick pile of papers I'm supposedly grading, so came on here to procrastinate and for some light entertainment...

lmao this is actually hilarious but sad at the same time because someone died, but just so ridiculous, all of them sound like pussies! I can't believe his defense, the guy has a sword and feared for life from an unarmed man, total pussy. This is the shit I had to endure in high school growing up in Surrey with a huge indo canadian population. This is what they do, act like gangsters and all tough and bring their 15 cousins along with them...both the boys AND the girls. They have this entitlement and weird culture of caste system where they are apparently at the top, so they think that translates the same here in Canada. I've heard stories of girls who would threaten to "pay off police" if anyone ever "ratted them out" because their parents own a big surrey house lmao! :pound:

they both had weapons, the 2 guys accused had baseball bat and golf club or something while the guy who died and his buddy witness x brought out the samurai sword and another weapon. no one was unarmed in this situation, they were all goofs

"evil laugh" Once upon a time I relieved the boredom factor with the comments I wrote on the submission. :) Of course I was allowed to fail people that didn't know the tables or how they are applied. I understand that now I would have to be aware of the damage caused when someone tells a poor unfortunate that the world isn't lake woebegone.

You would think that being born and raised in Canada, they would have no concept of this; unless its taught to them by their parents.

Makes me wonder if the "caste system" is being practiced within Indo-Canadian communities?

It is something they are taught to hold onto...I dated a VERY hot EI Lady for a short time, and she was from Surrey.
She explained how the Caste system was alive and well within their culture....It was something that she held onto in her social network.
For myself, I could have really given a shit...

Some families it is practiced deep within their roots. Usually families that are extended and that grandparents or a senior in their family at that generation have a tendency to maintain the caste system while most modern families couldn't give 2 shits about it.

of course they do, I'm not from India but even I know all about the jatt and rajput caste system, I learned that from my Punjabi friends.

It doesn't matter if we are born in Canada, our parents still teach us everything they can about our culture and instill it in us. But it ranges from modern to traditional, there are many modern people - like me, who couldn't give a crap about any of it, even my entire family is the same...I'm actually from an Islamic background, and most of my immediate family is very moderate we even have accepted intermarriages with white and asians, they are all cherry pickers of the religion, but then I also know some families who are so extremely strict that they will disown their daughter if she dated a non-muslim...and then theres the middle where if she dates a non-muslim, the guy has to "convert" in order to be accepted (he just has to recite a few words in arabic nothing more to it). It all depends on their own personal preference and how much brainwashing they went through.

I see no justice in manslaughter convictions.

Second degree at the least. Taking of the top of someone's head with a sword isn't done with anything other than intent to kil.
