Thanks to the wonderfull goodness of Political Correctness WE are not allowed to see TV programs or due to Political Correctness those TV programs would not see the light of day.

Best example I can think of is Married With Children.Yeah it was sexist and it was no holds barred and it was REALLY funny....from AL dealing with fat women in the shoe store to his own kids and his wife as well as Marci and he 2 husbands.

I saw many episodes and I loved them all.It was a great show with the only show being better was Seinfeld IMO.

One of my FAVES was when Al answers the door and Marci is holding a pan with a stuffed chicken and he says "Congratulations Marci...I had no IDEA you were expecting"

seems it's still ok to be shown in re-runs because it is viewed as one of the greatest comedies of all time, but there is no way all in the family would ever be allowed as a first run show. even though it was incredibly well written, every slang word for every ethnic group was used.

A lot of the old western shows that had heavily made up white people playing natives, the Lone Ranger comes to mind. The number one would be the Cisco Kid from the early sixties, that show manages to offend Mexicans, natives, women and even white people!

All In The Family is the first name that popped in to my head as well as soon as I saw this thread. Archie’s character was as racist, sexist and any other -ist you could think of! It was funny though..

Loved ‘All in the family’. Screw you all the politically correct assholes . My Grandfather complained about how stupid the Germans looked on Hogan’s Hero’s. I laughed my head off. It’s a comedy ffs!!!!

Its the exact opposite from what I can see. Anyone see the Southpark episode where Cartman was collecting jizz and talked about sucking it from a hose. That wouldn't fly back in the days of Archie Bunker

Thank you for bringing this to light SR. I was thinking of these shows when I replied in that PC thread.
The best comedies of ALL TIME were written then. Married with Children, All in the Family, Hogans Heroes.
Bar none the best SITCOMS to grace the world of (FUCK YOU Political Correctness !!)

All beit Hogans was not based on things like Archie or George Jefferson would spew.

And yah All in the Family is still being played on METV for those that want to watch it.
Funny though and does make one think. Being that statements made on those shows are so politically incorrect
it makes me wonder how they are allowed to air programs like that today without the TV station getting their
perverbial ass sued off.

Me too T8E, Me too. :pound:

I wonder if it's allowed because even George Jefferson, Archies FAVE to insult gives Archie his due with
calling him out. "Sorry Honkey, no whitey's allowed at Lionel's engagement party" LOL!!
Then George meets Lionel's GF's parents. One is white the other is Black. What does George
refer to them as?? The Zebra twins!! Jesus Christ !!
It was tit for tat in that show. How about the episode when Sammy Davis Junior visit's the bunker household?

CLASSIC!!!! :pound:

For all you folks who loved those shows you can purchase full season episodes not to mention
the entire series of Hogan's and All in the family from TCM.com
That's the Turner Classic Movie company.

Oh, but for you Anally Politically Correct folk I would not recommend purchasing them as you will be offended to
no end and just could not enjoy the comedy for what it is. Just thought I'd warn ya!
Sucks to be you! :heh: :p

I don't know if they have the Married with Children episodes. Will have to check.

Oh yes, another one we can't forget for it's greatness is the contributions from that English *ag* country
as Archie called it was the show, Benny Hill.
Now that was one of the sexist shows of all time. Great comedy!
Now there was the classic sexist English comedy of all time.

Then there was religious put down English shows like Dave Allen at Large.
That guy was a true nutcase in the sense of pitting Protestant against Catholic and making absolute
archaic fun of pitting the two religions against each other.

Man I miss that show. Will never forget his on stage debut he would be sitting in a lone chair on
a stage as the camera would focus in closer on him with his legs crossed and holding his head in
one hand. He would be looking over at the glass of water he had on said chair arm rest.

Then would say in his classic Irish accent and pointing at the water;
"WATER, Holy water, twill become gin in a moment" LOL!!

Any of you folk remember Dave Allen at Large? Oh shit excuse me it was an Irish Comedy
I believe not English. Will have to check on google to be sure. But what the hell.

Then of course Fawlty towers. This was Sexism in reverse as Fawlty had to endure countless attacks
of abuse from his "Little nest of Vipers" His wife Sybil Fawlty. What a shame they only made 12 episodes.
I believe it was one of the most talked about and watched sitcoms of all time in England when it
was running.

Yes Fawlty Towers, GOAT, had its own politically incorrect moments. The use of N word was quite common (The moose head episode, I think). John Cleese comes out of a hospital room and sees that its a black doctor who is treating his wife and clearly his reaction is of shock. “no he is from Barcelona.”

Regarding All In The Family, it was about a racist character but they balanced it well with Rob Reiner character. It was a great show nevertheless.

Seinfeld poked fun at political correctness and stereotyping a lot.
“ She is not Chinese!!!”
“If I like the girls of her (Chinese) race, how am I a racist?”

“Are you offended as a Jew?”
“ No I am offended as a comedian.”

I was wondering the other day if MASH could be aired today. It contained a lot of sexist chatter about the women serving with the men in the field hospital. Probably these days Hotlips Hoolihan would be viewed as a victim of sexual harassment. Actually, she was a victim of sexual harassment. Yet, in the day, MASH was thought of as quite a socially progressive show.

Take it you haven't seen American Dad..Simpsons....Family Guy....South Park....Anger Management....Two and a Half Men....Last Man Standing....etc..... True some are in repeat, but others are current..... Are we overly politically correct, of course we are...but least we can still fart in public without getting arrested.

In Lust Mostly
The Honeymooner's with Jackie Gleason.

Mary Tyler Moore with "Lou Grant"

Both were close to the acceptable line in their day.

This "Curb your Enthusiasm" kills me.

Beverly Hills. In the Kitchen eatin' vittles.
Many of the old cartoons we watched would definitely be off the air.
I always think of an old Yogi Bear cartoon where Yoyo the Japanese exchange bear shows up. They portrayed every racist, stereotypical view of the Japanese you could fit into a 4 minute cartoon.

This is tame by today's standards but there is also the episode of Leave it to Beaver where at breakfast June tells Ward he was little hard on "The Beaver" last night.

Cheers

Back then everyone was racist but also didn't care. My Chinese friends had no problem calling me a fucking roundeye.
Hongers and CBCs hated each other more than any two groups in human history.
People had thicker skins in those days.

Scooby Doo had an episode visiting Eskimos that was pretty funny.
Johnny Quest and his Sikh(?) buddies, they were always fighting savages.

I am confused by the argument and the logic.
The shows you mention are comedies and therefore use parody and satire to educate and reveal their message.
In no uncertain way were they on the side of racism, bigotry and sexism despite the fact that this was often the subject matter.
AITF was preceded by and then followed by shows that were incredibly similar in the topics they dealt with.

The Honeymooner's with Jackie Gleason.
Mary Tyler Moore with "Lou Grant"
Today the issues are different, the formats have evolved and so consequently, TV shows reflect that.

Presently a cutting edge show would be The Client List and Breaking Bad. Here the main characters are reputable members of society fulfilling all the expected obligations yet deviating in an incredibly sinister way. This simply would not have been allowed 30,40 or 50 years ago.

Kids today come home after school and watch reruns of The Sopranos, a story of family man Mafioso's that murder by night and love their kids by day. How politically correct is that as childrens entertainment?

Perhaps Storm Rider is lamenting the fact that viewing audiences have evolved but he hasn’t?

All in the Family was good, but, like many American sitcoms, it was based on an original British sitcom, "Till Death do us Part'. The protagonist, Alf Garnett, was WAY more politically incorrect than Archie Bunker. For example, Archie only said "black guy" , but Alf Garnett would use offensive racist terms that would never have got by the censors here, and still wouldn't.

Another example of an American watered down version of a British sitcom was Three's Company, based on the British show, "Man About the House". The British show was far more sexist and risqué than the American version.
