It's good to see Linden back for another year. I think we will see more production and leadership from him this year. I don't think Crawford gave him enough of a chance last year, and I also think Linden's responsibilities with the Player's Association over the last few years really took a toll on him. Being that the Canucks are going to be a younger team this year, Linden should be able to offer more leadership to those younger players.

An overall positive to the team.

He's not what he once was (are any of us?), but his leadership and experience will be a huge benefit to the kids.

Yes, it's nice that the team showed some loyalty this time....unlike the time when they gave the 'C' to Messier and ran him out of town.....

Loyalty in sports .... come on. It's a business, not a social club. The players go where they can make the most money; there's no loyalty in that. Why should owners show loyalty? If you can help the team and fit into the salary cap then you stay. If you want too much money, you're gone.

Loyality and Money?

Are you trying to tell me Mitchelle couldn't get more money playing else where? Or Bullis for that matter? If the money is stupid, yes go for it but playing where you would like to play for less is still within some players. Would you play for the Wilds for $3 M or Canucks for $2.5 M? I'm sure the pooning is much better in Van. than Minni.!

Linden will be okay on the 4th line, killing penalties, and playing about 6 minutes per game. That's about it.

Sure! It's only $500,000 PER YEAR U.S. difference, right? So how many years does it take you to earn that kind of dough?

Okay - I'll give him the benefit of doubt for now, but really, what's left in the tank for Linden? Seven goals last year - another year older means he's probably up for five this year. Another year slower in a faster league, so even penalty killing will be tougher. More prone to injury. Loyalty is great, but just cause he's a nice guy doesn't mean he can do the job. Basically they're hoping he still has something and his pay has been cut drastically, but I don't think it's beyond reality he doesn't last the season.

There has never been any doubt about my fondness of Trevor. I'm elated that he is back. He is probably 'THE' leader in the room, just because his character is that way. And I honestly do not think that Naslund is that charismatic of a leader by whos presence is almost demanding of it. Sometimes one does not need a 'C' on their chest to be followed.

It is good to see Trevor Linden back for another year with the Canucks. I really hope the Canucks make the playoffs and go along ways in post season.

with all the young, inexperience players on the team, Linden's
influence will be more important than ever, particularly since
Naslund is USELESS as a leader.

and while Linden may not have produced a lot of goals, he
wasn't exactly on the line to produce them, nor given the
minutes to play either ...

this is his last season and its unfortunate that he will
retire without winning the big one ... but he was so damn
close in 94!

Linden will have a better year guaranteed. There is one issue that is bothering me though. Nonis is happy to let Jason King go and play in Europe because he won't give him a one way guaranteed NHL contract. That doesn't really bother me, you can't have a gun held to your head by a still unproven player coming back from a major concussion. However, why is it that he and everyone else (coaches, media, etc) have virtually guaranteed Jesse Schultz a spot on the team when he hasn't played a minute in the NHL and is admittedly inconsistent with his effort game in and game out and has a lot of work to do defensively? With all the call ups last year (Green, Rypien, Bouck, Kavanaugh, Burroughs) how come Schultz didn't get a look? If he doesn't get significant ice time and score 15-20 goals it would have to be considered a major disappointment given the advanced hype. I hope I'm wrong but King's situation reminds me of Peter Schaeffer and R.J. Umberger. How are they doing? Right....right....MAJOR contributors on their teams.

You're right about the similarities with Schaeffer and Umberger. You could also point out the similarities with contract negotiations with Brandon Reid and how did he fair after a couple of seasons in Europe?

Other guys who tried to play hardball in contract negotiations were Dixon Ward, Lonny Bohonos, Josh Holden, etc... the list is long of players who didn't exactly fair too well in these types of contract negotiations.

Signing Trevor for a relatively paltry sum for another year is fine and all. However, my questions is this: who would step up as the leader on this team once Trevor retires??? They should've planned for something like this sooner as it wouldn't have been a bad idea last year to go after someone younger who fits into a Kris Draper or Michael Peca mold

yes and no ... King is coming back from a concussion and that can have
a big impact on his performance and durability so that comparison isn't
quite fair.

as for the contracts, this is where Burke was not so hot -- he let these
guys go and they have been good players for other teams ... meanwhile
he signs Bert and Marcus to HUGE contracts and the ding-dongs are
next to useless ...

if the Canucks finish in the top ten it will be a good season
if they make the first round it will be a great season
if they go any further it will be a miracle ...
