29 years ago yesterday, dire straits released their 'brothers in arms' album. the following from wikipedia details the tremendous popularity of that album:

Brothers in Arms is the fifth studio album by British rock band Dire Straits, released on 13 May 1985 by Vertigo Records internationally, and by Warner Bros. Records in the United States. Brothers in Arms charted at number one worldwide, spending ten weeks at number one on the UK Album Chart (between 18 January and 22 March 1986), nine weeks at number one on the Billboard 200 in the United States, and thirty-four weeks at number one on the Australian Album Chart. The album is the eighth best-selling album in UK chart history, is certified nine times platinum in the United States, and is one of the world's best selling albums having sold 30 million copies worldwide.

The album won two Grammy Awards in 1986, and also won Best British Album at the 1987 Brit Awards. Q magazine placed the album at number 51 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever.
also, from wiki:

Brothers in Arms was one of the first albums to be directed at the CD market, and was a full digital recording (DDD) at a time when most popular music was recorded on analog equipment. It was also released on vinyl (abridged to fit on one LP) and cassette.

Brothers in Arms was the first album to sell one million copies in the CD format and to outsell its LP version. A Rykodisc employee would subsequently write, "[In 1985 we] were fighting to get our CDs manufactured because the entire worldwide manufacturing capacity was overwhelmed by demand for a single rock title (Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms)."
a good part of the album's popularity was driven by MTV's music video of one of it's songs, 'money for nothing'. here is what i believe is a copy of the original mtv video... 'money for nothing' (the video's a bit choppy)

i heard this delightful bit of whimsy on the fm just now and thought i'd drop it into this thread. in one of the choruses instead of saying '...where women glow and men thunder...', i think they actually say '...where women blow and men chunder...' to chunder is to vomit, and we all know what to blow means! kind of strikes a humourous note that i hadn't thought of back in the day :D

this version is from 1981 and topped the charts around the world (they released a slightly different version locally in australia in 1980)

I just love Lisa Fisher's solo vocals on this song. Damn she has great pipes!

Wes Montgomery. Awesome tune to add to your song list "ladies" ** hint hint ** :D

Wes Montgomery was one of the solo jazz guitarists back in the day. Lots of artists copied his style but never stayed true to the jazz rifts. They often went commercial mainly because of their labels

Alicia Keys singing with one of the Guitar Gods I hardly ever miss when he comes to town. Seen him in Vegas a few times too  You always get your moneys worth with Carlos Santana.

I love the line in this song "longing for love but the struggle for the legal tender"

"I'm gonna be the happy idiot and struggle for the legal tender"
