This Documentary on Netflix, is a real eye opener !

Not being an American, I wasn't fully aware of how deeply rooted racism was in the American Constitution .
The 13Th Amendment, pretty much entrenches racism in American society .
The Home of the Free, is far from it !

A person like Trump, and his Supporters, will try to thrive on this societal Environment for their own gain !

I'm not a Political Historian, but, I hope that any racism in Canada isn't as systemic in our society .
And can be overcome, more realistically .

There is racism everywhere, but after spending time down there, I know we don’t serve it wholesale ,like our neighbours to the south.

Funny, when I visited parts of Ireland and the UK, your religion or where you were from was lot like racism; judging, denegrating, and hating people without knowing them at all.

We ain’t perfect, but I do think Canada is a lot more accepting and open to diversity in race, culture, and spiritual beliefs.

We live in a good time and a pretty fair society. That is something I am proud of as a Canadian. We got good values.

But if someone is acts like a douchebag, then fucke ‘em, and don’t call me a racist for calling them out.

I watched the documentary on Netflix.

I was appalled at the treatment of the American Black people in general. I can see a little bit why Blacks are enraged in the States.

The underhandedness and double-speak of political language (War on Drugs, War on Crime, 3 strikes and your out laws, Minimum sentences (server 85%) and more aimed at the Black people because it seems slavery and Jim Crow law were out, new obstacles had to be invented to punish Black people.

The corporate greed, which forces states to keep the pay for prison (under state contract) full and producing profit (for company shareholders), all while taking advantage of prisoners in jail. Sounds like they want to make more profit through prison reform measures (eg. high school diplomas, trade course etc).

Sounds like the 13 Amendment needs to be changed. A prisoner after serving his sentence/gets out of jail (even if its parole), should gets his voting rights back.

In Canada I know coloured people who say they get racially profiled (stopped just because they are coloured). Maybe I'm naive, I usually thought they were paranoid for some reason or chalked it up to a timely charactor flaw (they were doing something stupid/illegal at the time).

But that's what has been happening and will continue to happen.... The race card is a powerful thing especially right now, and anybody that's a douchebag to begin with will play it and no matter how right you were to call them out, you'll be made to look the asshole in the whole thing.

If you believe Canada is immune to systemic & systematic racism, you are simply not paying attention. Educate yourself. Whether it's directed at indigenous, black, asian or any of dozens of other examples, racism is alive and well in this country, as is sexism and class politics. If you disagree, that's your right, but I am betting you are a white male and it's my opinion you don't have a clue.

It's entrenched and in some cases, goes back as long as there has been a Canada, even before. The Indian Act, residential schools, the 60s Scoop, the head tax, Japanese internment camps, the Komagata Maru, countless examples of police on indigenous violence and brutality, if you think it's not happening here, it's time to pay attention and educate yourself. It's not a matter if we are better or worse than the USA or anywhere else. We are not living up to the ideals of what the country is supposed to stand for and we are not even following our own laws and constitution.

Actually MOD, it is because we as Canadians in the past made those mistakes, that the politicians now are trying to correct them. The police are only an extension of the political situation at the time and are a reflection of our society. When I went to school in the early 80s, it was multiculturalism that was the mandate. The blending of culture, and it was encouraged and not seen as a bad thing.
Back to the video, the man is saying that the police are dealing with poor people who are prone to criminal activities. Everyone will apply their own bias to this video for good or bad.
Now certain people are saying that our society has systematic racism. But I will say that most government policies are against sexism and harassment. You would think that racism would be not be there because of harassment policies.

The the real kicker is that these poor coloured people can be just as racist as white people can be. Is it because they are poor and uneducated, or just believe the propaganda their own people are spreading. Or is it because they have been on the receiving end of bad policies etc and bad policing; or just received racist comments from white people in general. The kettle is definitely Black... on both sides.
People can hate whoever they want to. Blame other people for their misfortunes. The truth is that if your are going to use the word RACISM, make sure you are not racist yourself (general statement for all). Kinda seems hard to be neutral, everyone has an opinion.

I think your right that we are not immune, but some of the policies of separating people in internment camps, residential schools, or head taxes where from a very different time.
We solved our “ Indian, or “ Japanese “ problems during times of conflict by separating them.
They were In different times then, which doesn’t make it right by any degree.....and right or wrong it was the policy of the day...

Having said that, when you compare the US and Canada....in those times, the atrocities towards indigenous people is night and day.
For myself.....I do compare the Canadians to the US, as we are their closest neighbours, and their influence is constantly bombarding our culture...
.If your going to look at the past, as you have in your quote, with all due respect, you may want to consider the two nations on their stand on Slavery in the 17 or 1800’s.
im not saying their is no racism here, but having people in my immediate family here with African genetics.....it is their opinion, without exception, that they prefer Canada, although they say , there is always room for improvement.

Rather than retweeting #BLM . Maybe the more effective way to demonstrate your disgust with Racism, is by boycotting Companies that don't have any Black leaders on their Board of Directors !

Nike might be a good place to start ? Even if They did pay Michael Jordan, and Tiger Woods millions of Dollars in endorsement Fees . Maybe that's part of the Problem ? Michael or Tiger didn't ask, "Hey I'd like to meet your Board of Directors ?" before They signed those very lucrative Deals with Nike ?

It makes Me wonder, how do We solve this Problem ?

I'd participate vigorously in this thread except it is too deep and covers segregation topics back as far as humans developed the "my god is better than your god" thing.
Suffice to say this is an excellent contemporary documentary and lets one understand what the prison industrial complex really is in the U.S.A. Strong recommend and kudos to the OP for putting this up.

I just wish to leave a quick note, as I am on my way out. I will only speak for myself, as a Black and First Nations Woman, that I personally take offence to being referred to as "coloured". That term was used so negatively by white people during the Jim Crow era and I cringe hearing it today.
Feel free to use my opinion any way you wish, but hopefully listen with empathy.
