France is selling their New York apartment for $48 million to help pay off their national debt.

France is asking $48 million for an 18-room duplex located at 740 Park Avenue, the exclusive Manhattan apartment building where Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis grew up and that is known for turning down celebrity would-be purchasers such as Barbra Streisand and Barbara Walters.

The sale of the apartment, which had been home to the French United Nations ambassador, as well as a Fifth Avenue townhouse, are aimed partly at reducing France's government debt, which stands at $1.9 trillion euros ($2.6 trillion).

Hi Ms. Sarah, not sure how your post relates to Celine (which was retriever's little french girl reference), but that is some f*cked-up sh*t, that's for sure! We should start a thread about expensive homes in the world. That would be cool! OK debt is not cool but that could be the topic of another thread altogether!

I had the impression that if you suggested someone from Quebec is French, they'd consider it an insult. :)
Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what I heard from one of my students.
I was at a convention in Ottawa yrs ago, people from across the country,so quite a few French-Canadians were there.

I was talking to 2 of them, one from Manitoba, the other from Alberta&they were steamed...the Quebecers had told them they spoke French "quite well"

needless to say these 2 told the que-prick-ers to shove their arrogant condescension up their khybers.

As a former Quebecer (I have now lived in B.C. longer than I have in Quebec), I remember when Céline decided to branch out, so to speak, and started singing in English. The pure-laine Québecois were incensed, accusing her of treason and turning her back on her people. Personally, I thought it was a shrewd business decision. She wouldn't be as rich today had she stuck to singing in French. And yes, French is my mother tongue. :)

Personally, I thought it was a shed business decision.
I don't usually correct other folk's typos but here it seems appropriate... not "shed" but "shrewd".

And my first language spoken is French, though I lost it long ago. Just bits, now.

Bien sur, pour la monnaie, c'est meilleur Celine chante en Anglais!

Of course, the smartest thing she did was stay married to the same guy despite him being so much older than she is.

She's married to the guy who sold his house to fund her first record.
