Thx Doc Ya, I 'm doing four nights in BBK (so three full days there which felt right) then three nights in Chiang Mai. Then flying home from CM. I wanted some beach time (next trip) but thought for my first trip to Thailand I'd hit BKK and CM. Future trips, beach time Looking forward to it. Picked up some bhats today

All I can say is give yourself some LUXURY for travel.....take the night train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and opt for 1st class....might cost you $100 and you get a VIP cabin with beds/wif-fi/running water and an lcd touch screen to order food/drinks etc.

It is oppulence on a slow enjoyable mode of transport.....you dont have to listen to a screaming baby or ill behaved kids nor even assholes...a private first class private cabin.

Good decent train travel is the best of the best.

If you are only going for a week, fly to CM dont waste any time on a train. personally I wouldnt go to Thailand for anything less than a month. the flight is just too long, you lose two days in travel time. Was just in Colombia for 2 weeks and its now my go to place if I have less than a month holiday. Dont get your Baht here, its more expensive, the money booths ai the BKK airport give really good rates. Thailand also isnt like here and S America, very few places let you pay with debit or visa.

Yep, I'm flying to CM.

I know. Thailand is a helluva long flight for a week but that's all I have available right now Colombia on my list as well. Also never been there. Thanks for the tip re debit and visa. I already took out some bahts here. Are there lots of bank machines in BKK to take more cash out? Thx for the intel

There is ATM everywhere in Bangkok. Most machines charge you 200 baht to use it tho.

Don't know if it has been mentioned but Thailand has one of the highest rates of HIV/ AIDS in the world. Have fun, but make sure you are careful!
