And it was just that attitude that made me change the way I operated my business.
It mattered to me that I gave up making dinner with my SO to stay until 5:30 for a client who was whining that since I worked until 4 and he worked until 5, he wouldn't be able to see me unless I stayed late. I never did that again for anyone after the no-show loser was, well...a no show loser. You wouldn't dare jam on your dentist, he would hit you up for the cash. What am I supposed to do? Go to the bank and tell them a guy who lives in Burnaby and whose real name might be Bob owes me $200 for a missed appt., can you track down his acct and get me the money, thanks.
It matters to me that on occasion as a favour I would take 4 hours (2 hour appt., 2 hours to get get ready and travel) out of the middle of a Saturday to go see someone who couldn't make it during the week. Eventually the favour aspect of it was forgotten and it became an expectation that I would come in on my day off, I stopped doing that too.
You could say "oh, you were just doing that cause you needed the cash". Actually, no, I was doing it to be nice person. Eventually I came to realize the "she's just a hooker, who cares" attitude is fairly prevalent, sadly enough. I started treating it as a 'real' business after that. These are my hours, not a minute before or a minute after. Just like your doctor, hairstylist, grocer, etc.
