time for some sports talk?

the Canucks are well discussed in a separate fine thread so I'll just wish them well on this challenging road trip.

meanwhile, NFL Playoffs are here!

Saturday...

Raiders vs Bengals....if Joe Burrow doesn't have knee problems I like Cinci here.
Patriots vs Bills..each won in the other's barn during the season. Always wary of the Bellichick factor, but I'm picking Buffalo.

Sunday

Eagles vs Buccaneers.....Bucs are missing receivers,Godwin(injury)and Brown(space cadet)but Brady-Gronkowski tandem plus
strong defense makes me think TB takes this without much sweat.

49ers vs Cowboys...might be the best game of the weekend.Cowboys have been inconsistent and I wonder if the 49ers will sustain that
momentum from the epic comeback vs the Rams. I'm picking them to do so.

Steelers vs Chiefs...on paper this is a mismatch...but we know what puppies do on paper, right?Still,I can't see Big Ben playing beyond Sunday night.

Cardinals vs Rams... this seems almost a toss-up..I'll go with LA being the home team, but wouldn't be surprised if Kyler Murray
were to win this one with his legs.

so, going with home teams except for SF-Dallas.

what are your thoughts?

Okay, sports. Not hockey, or not local.

How about that Bayern Munich, lads ? Poor Davies right now though; COVID has laid him low.

well, holy f..k-knuckle, I got 6 out of 6 last weekend, something as frequent as a Halley's Comet sighting, lol.

Cowboys-Niners figured to be 1 of the top games.Full marks to SF, but Dallas really crapped the cot, 14(!)penalties,the costliest was the hand
in the face which, instead of forcing SF to punt, gave them a new set of downs and allowed approx 90 seconds more before the "Boys could get
the ball.
they had about 40 seconds rather than approx 2 minutes to try to score.

Buffalo scored 7 td's on their 1st 7 possessions....against a Belichick defense!who saw that coming?

KC looked flat as a runway in the 1st quarter...then exploded on offence.

I should quit while ahead but that's what a smart guy would do.....so..
I think GB&TB will win this wkend, can't see Rodgers or Brady losing at home.

Titans will probably have Henry back, I think they are a bit strong for Cinci...but I wouldn't call it a major upset if Bengals win.

I think Bills-Chiefs is the top game here and will likely have the highest over/under for the wkend.
I see Bills carrying their momentum to victory, as KC has been inconsistent on defence.
Might well be a case of last team with the ball wins.

so, going with home teams, except for Bills winning at KC.

btw, another oddity last week....all 5 winning home teams also covered the spread.
I don't bet, but friends tell me that is very rare.

Anybody else with opinions/predictions?

meanwhile,..Canucks salvage last 2 games of a challenging road trip but are hard hit by Covid.
if Demko is out better call the zamboni guy, lol.

well, after a 6 for 6 WildCard Weekend, I went 0 for 4 in Division Round.Only thing I got right was a high over/under in KC-Buff game and last team with the ball wins.

1st 3 games won by the visitors on last-second field goals and Bills-Chiefs go to OT.
What a weekend!

I wonder how many pacemakers short-circuited in the last 2 minutes of Chiefs-Bills?

the group I watched with all felt we were watching the de facto Super Bowl, as we thought the winner would beat Cinci and whoever wins the NFC.

we were watching in a bar without audio so I don't know if Nantz or Romo commented, but when the Bills had late leads of 29-26 and then 36-33
we remembered the 4 pts KC left on the field with a missed FG, and PAT.Almost came back to haunt.

once again winning the toss proved crucial.
I don't see anything wrong with having a 10 minute OT...and playing 10 minutes!after that, go to the present format.

Depending on your POV, either both offences were dynamite..or both defences were sieves.
Never seen anything like the last 2 minutes, awesome.

Canucks competing with the elite teams, but no points for competing.
maybe a cause for optimism?
with so many goalies out due to covid I wonder who played for Abbottsford in their 4-2 win in San Diego?

I looked at the video of the ECHL game where a guy was suspended for "racist gestures" toward Jordan Subban but couldn't see
what it was with so many guys interacting.

I wasn't the least bit sorry to see Jocko get booted out of Australia for his anti-vaxx I'm-above-the-rules entitlement
I don't follow tennis but how not to be aware of that drama queen.

more NFL next wkend, impossible act to follow..I'm going with KC and I think Rams edge Niners.
Enjoy!

Great game, truly unique and bizarre goal for Canada and a great goal stop in the 90th something minute.

But for me watching the post game thing with Andi Petrillo sitting there in that tight little dress thing with her streaky hair and those unbelievable thighs. Oh My Fucking Oath. I want to fuck her so bad! Geesus. Now that is one outstanding athletic woman .. um um.

Need to make an SP appointment before the night is out.

Yeah, Canada's still rolling on, with probably the strongest men's team this country has ever had.

I watched the Canada / US game, which was a great underdog victory.

Against El Salvador I only saw the last 1/3 or so of the game (live), because I didn't realize it was on. I always worry when Canada plays El Salvador because, well, they seem to resort to some... umm... "antics", which Canadians have a hard time dealing with. (Am I wrong about this reputation?)

Anyway, the goal "by Hutchinson" was truly bizarre, and no doubt will be on various networks Weird Plays Of The Month (or Year). But hey, "by any means necessary", right? The Salvadorans must feel particularly unlucky over it.

Also, Borjan made another great save near the end.

Oh, yeah, the Winter Olympics have started already !

No opening ceremony yet, but Canadian women's hockey has had a win against Switzerland already.

Will the Olympic stuff go here, or become a totally new thread?

Was listening to a Jimmy Kimmel sound clip on the radio yesterday. They sometimes go out on the street and ask people questions about things that never happened to see what kind of dumb answers they get.

This one was about Winter Olympics. Asked a woman what she thought about the figure skaters that fell through the thin ice they were skating on.

She replied it was definitely due to global warming. Surprising how dumb some people are.

Reminds me of that Rick Mercer thing "Talking To Americans". Some of the answers they got to absurd questions were truly astonishing. Also there was another incident when George W. Bush once got conned into calling Jean Chretien "Jean Poutine".

Low-information people are easy prey. In this case, I suspect they probably asked a dozen or more folks until they found someone who knows nothing about ice skating or the Olympics.

I have a strange feel about the Winter Olympics.....yes, covid has thrown a f..k into virtually everything, including the Olympics, but also there's
China's human rights record to consider.
Thought it interesting to watch the Opening Ceremony in which the flag of China was passed along apparently by 56 different minorities
as a show of unity for all...bit of propaganda there.

let's hope the athletes don't test positive, who knows how long they'd have to quarantine before being allowed to leave?

as mentioned above the Cdn men's soccer team is rocking!
I doubt if the most optimistic supporter expected them to be in top spot, undefeated, with 3 games to go.

Super Bowl....Rams are 4(?) pt fav's, and obviously a great team, but after watching the Bengals comeback last week in KC I don't
think I'd bet against them.

Finally, Canucks get a chance to get better re covid during the all-star break.
standings have a strange look to them what with some teams playing fewer games due to the #^%$&covid.

By far the most talented, and best coached, men’s football team ever. Winning three very difficult games without Alphonso Davies, one of the world’s best, is amazing

It's hard to watch the Olympics with the time zone differences. At least I got to see the men's downhill race tonight. (Poor Canadian got 4th; missed a medal by 7/100th of a second.)

agree with rlock re time differences.....I'm not yet into it enough to plan to get up at 3am to watch an event.

hockey medal round will change that I think.

after talking to several ppl who follow NFL very closely(they're all taking LA) I'll pick the Rams on Sunday but I wouldn't be surprised if Cinci
were to win.

somebody commented on Burrow's suit being a jinx?

factoid...teams wearing white have won 15 of the last 18 Super Bowls....I'm not superstitious myself....bad luck to be superstitious.

was there 1 post-season game that didn't go down to the last minutes this season?

I was wondering how the zebras missed the facemask on Cinci's 3rd quarter TD?
was the defense-holding call a makeup?
wouldn't want to think so......the refs had pretty much let them play but that holding call turning a 4th down into a 1st and goal was huge

Olympics having the usual drama, controversy, etc. finding it hard to get interested.

wonder what the Canucks will do at the trade deadline?
guess it'll depend on how they perform the next few weeks?

what are your thoughts on these and any other sports topics?

So, that's that for North American hockey in the olympics. Didn't watch just got the news on my phone. As a matter of fact most of this olympics I see results well after the fact. And me posting this is probably of about the same interest level as many are feeling about these games.
