Remember Expo 86?

We were in line for the Soviet pavilion. An American foursome comes along, so cliche it was funny. Aviator shades, guidebook in hand.
One of the women stands right in front of the sign identifying the pavilion and says "What's this place?"
A guy looks in his guidebook: "looks like it's the Russian pavilion".
The woman says "oh we don't want to go in there, it's full of Russian stuff". And they all walked away.

None so blind as those who will not see.

It's sooo true, a few of my american friends tried to involve me in their politics, and I flat out told them, Canadians freed slaves... we smuggled them thru the underground railroads to save them from the Elitists... to save them from the way America used to be...That is something America as a country can ever say, they never freed slaves. It was the Democrats who were FOR slavery all along... The Republicans under Abe Lincoln began to abolish slavery... Imagine where North America would be without Canada? We have a pretty good History, yes there were residential schools and it's not something we can ever be proud of, there are other things that we CAN be proud of. I still love my American neighbours, so adorable and I honestly cannot name the 50 states, but its never been my life goal either ;)
You're familiar with the civil war and the ideals it was fought over?

British Columbia secondary school Social Studies taught that the United States Civil War was fought to stop Southern succession.

By the way, care to guess what Trump's Apprentice show averaged over 8 years? More than 10 times what this Sorkin drivel did.

Heck, even Arnold's disaster version of Celebrity Apprentice averaged more than TRIPLE what newsroom did.
Now that's pretty much a clear indictment on the mentality of American TV viewers and the so-called Reality TV phenomenon that caters to the lowest common denominators of society.
However, none of that stops me from crossing the line and enjoying myself in the US. I have fun.

Americans walk around other countries and think they own it (they don't). They don't know anything about the countries they visit, the cultures.
Actually, most Brits I've run into in western Europe (especially Portugal and France) are much worse. Entitled, eh wot?

I've met some smart Americans in my time. Mostly the ones that frequently come to Canada and get educated so to speak while they're here.

Newsroom was way over most American's heads. Too much dialogue with meat on it that the Deplorables could handle in between their Cheeto and Cola commercials.

Thanks for bringing up Apprentice show which further dumbs down America. You reap what you sow. #45's intelligence is quite questionable.

Look at the Newsroom clip (probably didn't the first time, right?) It has the numbers where US Students stand vs the ROW. For the Greatest Nation on Earth, you guys do a shit job at education. Making it only available to the rich at an Average of $50K per year further adds to your education problem. Hence having #45 as your President now.
Right, and you've got a fricking genius as Prime Minister?

At least our guy went to Wharton and made a billion dollars (we think). What year of community college or acting class did Justin complete? Maison de verre, n'est ce pas?

and don't try to pass off your Canadian high brow TV watching.

I looked up to Top 20 rated TV programs of all time in Canada. Wanna bet how many are Canadian acted programs?

Zippo. None. Zero. No Mr. Dressup. No Beach combers. No Trailer Park boys.

The Top 20 programs are....Hockey games.....Winter Olympics....The Super Bowl (tsk tsk...not the Grey Cup).....and the Oscars (tsk tsk...not the Genies).

Hmmm. If our education programs are so bad, why do so many Canadian students want to come to the US to study? I doubt it goes the other way (who wants to go Guelph?)

and you're right about the passports. I know so many Americans who've never had a passport. They say they don't need it cause there's still so much of the US they haven't seen.

You guys NEED to go other places because your country is 97% ice, except for a slim 30 mile band along our border. no wonder so many of you have passports. Just proves my point.

Canada is an enigma. How can an inferior country have a superiority complex?

Do you read or research anything before you have to get your gun off? Try actually reading something first so you don't look so foolish and Trollish in front of all these inferior Canadians. It's ok if you have to mouth the words as you read. We expect that from you.

Most Canadian Students going to the USA for education are on a full ride scholarship. Athletes and many scholastically gifted students get full rides. A free ride is always best IMO.

Turns out though that there is an 80% increase in US Students going to Canadian Universities now. Our fees for foreign students are higher than Canadian Students but still affordable compared to the USA.

https://www.canadastudynews.com/2017/01/24/applications-study-canada-american-students-surge-80-percent/

Then there is the Dorito Effect with students picking Canada over the USA. Need I say more?

https://www.cnbc.com/2017/08/09/why-students-are-choosing-to-go-to-college-in-canada-instead-of-the-us.html

A billionaire. LOL We shall see once those dreaded tax returns are finally made public via Robert Mueller et al.

I will give it to CrazedandAbused that the US has the best TV programs.

But while you guys were worshipping your TV celebrities, we built a health system that covers everybody and bankrupts nobody,

a public education system that isn't under constant attack by one of the political parties,

a criminal justice system that doesn't trample minorities, with about 1/7th your incarceration rate,

maternal and child mortality rates that are nearly the lowest in the 1st world, rather than the highest,

a voting system that's not gerrymandered and suppressed,

federal and provincial bureaucracies that actually work pretty well

and while our Prime Minister didn't go to Wharton, he does know the subject matter, didn't make his money bankrupting his partners and customers and isn't a senile, flubbing orange embarrassment on the world stage.

But, yeah, enjoy your TV shows.

Those of you expressing outrage at the civil forfeiture going on in the US do, I hope, understand that British Columbia operates one of the nastiest civil forfeiture schemes in North America. Compared to the way BC operates, the American cops are small potatoes.

This from the Globe and Mail from February 11, this year:

"The Globe and Mail has reported extensively on the Civil Forfeiture Office, which was established as a way to fight organized crime but has come to have a far broader reach. The office does not need a criminal conviction or even charges to pursue a file. The Globe has interviewed those who have had to fight to keep their homes, vehicles, money and even a coin collection. Others have been unable to afford to argue their case."

That's a very scary point. It isn't necessary for a person to have been charged with a crime, let alone convicted of one. If the BC Civil Forfeiture Office thinks you might be a bad guy, they can grab your assets. If you want your property back, you have to prove that they are wrong. In other words, you are assumed to be guilty, and you have to find a way to prove that you are not.

For Canadians, and British Columbians in particular, to be pointing fingers at the US for their civil forfeiture actions is mis-placed. We should be looking in the mirror.

Hey CrazedandAbused, breaking news: the US has some good things going for it and some bad things. It is great for some things. This does not mean it is great by all measures. Neither is Canada. It depends on what a person values, and no one can tell another person what matters to them. Feel free to love your country. Just don't expect everyone else to see it through the same lens you do. And a person can still live with someone, live somewhere, or work somewhere and yet see he/she/it has flaws.

Don't know about the cop in Georgia, but BC's Civil Forfeiture Act is being dealt a constitutional challenge on the grounds that it infringes on Charter rights.

I grew up in Britain. Met some great folk there also some fools. I moved many years ago to Canada, met some great folk here, also some fools. Now long retired I've had the good fortune to work in most European countries and even Russia, but never worked in the USA. Bottom line is that while education does have a role in how people turn out, I've met educated shits and poorly educated gems.

A few personal opinions:

1/ One of Canadians favorite pastimes on display here. American bashing. Its one of those rare occasions where our ugly side which we keep hidden away from public view comes out on full public display..the smug sense of superiority permeating this thread that we are so much smarter, so much more caring, so much more worldly than those "deplorable" gun totin ignorant hicks from south of the border Its a great Canadian tradition that hasn't abated over the decades.

2/ Calling America a "fascist" country because a cop in Georgia had no idea what a Canadian drivers license was or whether it was legitimate is completely over the top.
Facts:
a/ She was speeding quite excessively
b/ Her validation papers..passport etc were digital copies ON HER PHONE for fucks sake
c/ From the Tennessee DMV website she was REQUIRED to get a Tennessee drivers license after living there for 30 days which she failed to do and having told the officer that she was living and studying in Tennessee the officer then deduced that the Canadian license was invalid.

In any event the "fascist" country took pity on her and did dismiss the charges and return her $880 bail bond so the whiny lazy millennial who thinks life begins and ends on her phone hopefully learned a valuable life lesson. Was it excessive? Perhaps but she has herself to blame for a lot of what happened.

3/ Canadians need passports to travel to the US and Mexico so a higher percentage of us hold them because its our destination of choice and most of us live within a couple of hundred miles of the border and travel over there for gas, groceries, Las Vegas, Florida, New York or California trips etc. They have a lot of interesting places to visit and warmer weather. It doesnt make us any smarter or wiser or mean we travel off continent at a higher percentage than they do or make us better people.

4/ A 32 year old incident by one group at Expo defines all American tourists as morons? Come on Westwoody! As if there aren't ignorant tourists from all countries . Perhaps the worst I ever encountered were Germans in Thailand. Arrogant, rude, abusive, uncaring about the local culture and always drunk. But it doesn't define all Germans for me and I would never try to extend it out to all Germans as a people

If you are going to mention the content I have posted, please keep it in context.

The Fascist comment is aimed at Police Departments who take cash off of traveling Canadians while in the USA.

READ the CBC link as posted below.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/americ...rge-you-but-they-ll-grab-your-money-1.2760736

As you can see, it has nothing to do with the Student speeding in Georgia. It is totally about Police essentially robbing innocent citizens based upon their new powers to take the Cash under the "terror or drug trafficking laws". No judge or jury just the cops taking the cash.

There is another link within the student's awful event.

It's quite relevant to anyone travelling by car thoughout the states. It's the extraordinary powers given to LEO to fight 'War on Terror'. Such bullshit, the cops are after your cash. You get pulled over for BS reason but most likely because you have Canadian plates on your car.

The Cop asks for permission to search your car and if you decline they will anyway because you have something to hide.

It's so corrupt now. I'm disgusted by how that country has turned into a Fascist State.

My intent was to provide an example of a subset' behaviour. Of course they are a minority. Xenophobia is rampant everywhere these days and getting worse.

Nah, the worst are Limey soccer hooligans.
My cousin was one and is now a Royal Marine.

Well thought post Hugh, nice and sensible.
The bane of these discussions is emotional ranting.
