Woooooo! Hockey season is..uh..back in..uh..full swing and..uh..with that comes..uh..all of the..uh..interviews with the..uh..players after the..uh..game. Even better, we..uh..get to see them..uh..get interviewed on the..uh..evening news and..uh..give us their..uh..valuable..uh..input on the..uh..game.
I notice..uh..that..uh..the coaches do not..uh..say "uh" quite as much as..uh..the..uh..players do, and I was..uh..just wondering if..uh..that was a..uh..pre-requisite for..uh..becoming a..uh..coach.

Don't forget "y'know". 'Cause...y'know... it's a really good way of...y'know...filling space and pauses...y'know... when the guy is...y'know...trying to think of the right cliche to...y'know...give to the reporters.

I remember draft day...seeing the Canucks' first pick and thinking the same thing: we're gonna get years and years of quality interviews outta this guy.

It's really no wonder. I had a couple of friends growing up who were great hockey players. They pretty much completely stopped focusing on school at about the age of 11 or 12. So, the average pro hockey player has roughly the equivalent of a grade 5 or 6 education. They're sort of like farmer's kids in the old days before school attendance became mandatory. Once they were old enough to work the farm they were lucky if they got to go to school for the few short months between fall's harvest and spring's plant.
