I totally agree with you. As it is right now we're overpaying and signing ridiculously long contracts with our goalie and d.men while not focusing on what the team really needs. And even for those Luongo fans out there, come on think about it, 12 years? Its just too excessive....the more this Luongo contract feeds off the blindness hysteria by the bandwagon fans in this city, why even bother paying a goalie that kind of $$$?

What some people in this thread don't understand is that Luongo most likely won't play until he is 43. If Luongo decides to retire when he's 40 after the 18/19 season with 3 years left in his contract, the remaining $16 million of his cap hit disappears. That is because if you sign a contract before you're 35, the cap hit for that contract goes away when you retire. In the unlikely event he chooses not to retire when he's 40 and wants to play out his entire contract, the Canucks have a few options to deal with the remaining $16 million cap hit.
-They can buy out his last three years for $3.16 million ([1.6+1+1]*2/3) and his cap hit would be $400,000 for the next 6 years.
-They can send him to the minors, pay him his full 3.6 mil but take none of the cap hit.
-They can trade him or waive him.
-They can let him play if he's still worth the hit.
-If he chooses to retire when he's 39 after the 17/18 season with $7 million remaining over 4 years, then the Canucks are freed of $21.3 million of cap hit.

This is a great deal for the canucks, as long as Luongo can play to the same caliber he is playing currently for the next 6 or 7 years...after that he probably ends up retiring anyways

The cap hit for the ENTIRE term of the contract will be 5.33 million per season. So even though Luongo will make $10 million two seasons from now his cap hit for that season will still be 5.33 mil.
He knows how it works, he just sees what he wants to see in this contract.
It boils down to an 8yr contract with a 5.33mil hit each year.
Luongo will actually make more, but it doesn't affect anything, except his and the owners pocketbooks. The 5.33 mil ranks him 9th among goalies.
There was talk for days prior that it would be 4-6yr at 7.5-8.0mil. I am glad we did not get this.
I also think there is more to this contract that we know yet. Gillis mentioned how both sides have out clauses well before the 12 years. I would love to know more about that.
Its kinda funny, I was listening to a sports radio show from Detroit of all places.
Callers were calling in. Mad as hornets cause Lou's contract isn't fair, and the Canucks are using loopholes to get him way cheaper than he's worth. How the NHL should investigate and cancel the contract, and fine the Canucks, and even take away our draft picks next year for doing this. It was really funny.
