Ding dong the (ex) mayor is dead. Love him or despise him, he was a tour de force. Condolences to the family; everyone deserves that. Will there be a lying in state? Public memorial service out of the city's coffers? Might be a little much for some people in Toronto.

I recall reading about Rob Ford and how much his constituents liked him when he was a councillor. Apparently if the City didn't get shit done, Rob Ford would make sure it happened.
They were the same people who helped him become Mayor and get re elected too.

He was sort of like a real life "King of Kensington" if you will.

All I know about him is his TV personae and the comedic relief I got from watching Late Night TV shows poking fun at Toronto's Mayor.

I am a betting man and say there will be a service for him although not too flashy.

R I P Rob Ford.

That is to bad to hear that, I happen to like Rob Ford, only because after the Media found out Rob wasnt so "perfect". Go firgure a public figure NOT perfect. Either way RIP Rob!

I would never say "rot in hell" - he was a good guy that did his own thing despite being a political figure. I actually thought he was ok, just a bit embarrassing at times on a worldwide stage.

Like girth-brooks, I would never say "rot in hell". And I would never say 'ding dong the (ex) mayor is dead'.

The guy died of cancer at the age of 46 and left behind a wife and 2 young kids.

"ding dong, the mayor is dead" and "rot in hell" classy comments indeed.

yes,he was a flawed individual, but he was also someone's father,husband,brother,etc....in other words he was a HUMAN BEING and doesn't deserve those vile, tasteless remarks.

I agree with you: a deeply flawed human being. Also note that I did not say that I wished him or his family ill. However, there are those who will, and who did. Like I said, he was a tour de force. Cancer fucking sucks, and as you say, he was a husband and father when you strip away everything else that he became infamous on the world stage for. He was shameless as the mayor, he shamed the city he represented, but it's still a shame that he left behind 2 young kids who will grow up without their dad.

Rob Ford became infamous for using crack and being an alcoholic. I don't judge him, or anyone for that matter, for suffering from the disease of addiction. I do, however, judge him for regularly beating his wife. Toronto police have said that there had been numerous domestic violence calls to the Ford residence over the years. His wife and his children suffered under the tyranny of a dangerous and powerful man.
So yeah...maybe the use of the phrase "rot in hell" is actually perfectly appropriate in this case.

Lots of people die of cancer daily that are far more deserving of sympathy.
Really, the guy was arrogant jackass, not a man of the people at all.
Voters deserve someone who does the job they are paid to do, not an incompetent slob who sleeps through council meetings.

I usually save the Rot in Hell designation for those most deserving like Pol Pot or Bin Laden.

Sure Ford was definitely in the "Not Perfect" group and did some rotten things to those close to him.

Bear in mind like me, not many people on this board are perfect in the eyes of the public

Purveyors and buyers of sex are accepted within these boards but if you asked the general public I'm pretty sure we would not be accepted as 'normal'. Pot calling Kettle perhaps?

Like my Grandma used to say "There was only one perfect man ever and they nailed him to a cross."

He was quite the character and I might have been a bit embarrassed to be be a Torontonian during the height of his notoriety but he also leaves behind and a widow, a couple of young kids and a grieving family.
RIP Rob.
