I want to ask what may be a dumb question. I am considering booking an appt with a sp and under her contact booking info she requests a reference provider. What does she mean by a reference provider?

She is looking for contact information for an SP that you have visited with before - hopefully someone who she knows of and can trust and who can say you are an OK client. This is to help her screen out potential jerks.
You get this requested by American SPs - it is more of a rarity north of the border.

So, If I have never been with a sp before and can't provide one am I likely to be refused?

I guess it's just a matter of seeing another girl who does not ask for references first... then ask her if she can be your reference!

If you don't seem too curious and get their radar up they may let it slide.
What some do in the states is to ask for your work number and verify that you have a legitimate job and are not vice laying a snare. Depends if you are comfortable handing out company and employment info.
I'd only trust that info with a provider that has an impeccable reputation.
