Did anyone grow up watching this TV series starring Johnny Depp? I was just a young kid growing up when this came out and with it being filmed in Vancouver, it caught my interest because of that as well. I have been watching episodes the last few days and it is quite a trip down memory lane to the late 80s.

Sadly, I also noticed on YouTube or the re-broadcast episodes on TV that the original music was substituted for some generic music, which really hurt the scenes. The original songs would have been some big hits that were out at that time and really would have helped set the mood to the scene. Does anyone know why that had to be done? Obviously it is a cost issue, but I'm just wondering how much it is. Also, is there a way to watch the original episode with the original music, or is the only way someone video recording the episode when it originally aired on Fox nearly 30 years ago?

You may be interested in the 21 Jump Street film. It's a comedy take on the same subject material and meant more as a parody than a true reboot. Its sequel, 22 Jump Street, is a rare sequel that works just as well as the original.

First half of the first question - Copyright. Most artists wouldn't want their music rebroadcast without royalty fees.
Second half of the first question - Copyright. Youtube has algorithms that track down music used in videos and, if it's not an original creation, it will block the video. Therefore, to prevent that issue....

The only way to view original episodes with original music would be to find the distribution of the show - disk or VHS. Failing that, you can pirate it.
