The Port Mann Bridge HOV Lane is shut down for Winter Maintenance, what a joke!!!

A multi billion dollar bridge built where it snows shouldn't have the HOV lane shut down during the winter.

They do know it snows here, correct?

They had spring, summer, fall to do the work, why wasn't the work done then?

What work are they doing anyways?

Why is it shutdown every winter?

I live on a hill

It was cheap entertainment watching the idiots.

One guy nearly hit me on the sidewalk but I was paying attention. The idiot had worn out tires and and was completely clueless.

Cable-stayed bridges seem to have those problem, at least those two. Not sure about others like Pitt. My guess is that the cables build up ice a certain way and then drop it onto the traffic because of where the cables are positioned.
Any engineers out there can feel free to clarify, but this is my guess.

Oh, every snowfall it's like the culling of the herd. SUVs / pickups seem to be the most likely to end up sitting tipped over in a ditch. (I bet tow truck drivers could confirm this.) A lot of these guys act like 4WD makes them invincible. Sure, they don't get stuck so easily, but as you say, 4 wheels on bald or summer tires is no advantage. Maybe worse, because they can go just fast enough to get into trouble. They seem to not understand things like momentum, traction, center of gravity, etc., work (and how little of that can be improved by 4WD).
Or maybe something just goes off in their brain and they drive worse than usual. To be fair, I see lots of drivers in general start to act weird in the snow. As if lane divisions don't matter anymore, red lights and stop signs do not have to be obeyed, etc.

I have a bit (a very little bit) of sympathy for the 4WD drivers that get into difficulty. Much of their problem is that they have been brainwashed by the advertising of auto manufacturers to believe that 4WD is safer. It just has more traction to get up and go, but there is no improvement on control.

Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t they have to wrap the cables in plastic on the port Mann just after they built it to stop the ice from falling.

The government cheaped out and decided no heated decking system was needed to save 2 million dollars. Well 1 big icing years back cost more that that in ICBC claims. The solution was then the sliding chain rings. This is the reason for the winter maintenance when it could have been done early fall

I view it a bit more simply. None of them have had to drive for 5+ months in real winter as served up by our Prairies. That experience tends to solve that problem for most who are not inherent ass hats.
