I my experience (as a Mod on another type of forum) Trolls have become very sophisticated in how they agitate the masses on forums. Typically they lay out a long semi legitimate story and bait posters into a debate. Once the debate is on, they will usually change the course of the discussion with nonsense comments, changing the topic mid stream and challenging the perceived more influential posters.
Once they have people wound up they will then make jokes or laugh at their responses. Or they make simple small innocuous comments without responding to the other poster.
This usually enrages people and the Troll has scored again.
Argues repeatedly, uses irrelevant facts and disrupts the flow of the thread are the three things I look for when watching these types.
Most have developed it as an art form and are indignant pleading innocence when they have been called a Troll.
