we're half way through...

we have home country advantage...

and the medal total is extremely disappointing...

things can change, but our athletes just aren't getting it done...

why can't we be more like the Americans...

Do you do anything else other than complain or put others down? The people at the events are having a great time and the city is getting great reviews all around the world. The city is electric and people are walking around with smiles on their faces. I can see how all that would upset you;) Later loooooooosa its UFC time!!!

Im pretty happy with our performance, and Im very happy with our medal count so far. I would never wish unto any county to be 'more like the americans' nope never would. We are doing really well at the highest level of performace and Ive really enjoyed the few events that I have made it to. Go Canada Go!! :)

I think we are giving too much pressure to our Olympians. Back off and give them some room to do what they need to do.

Canada is doing well.. except for the fact that so many of their "medal hoefulls" seem to choke when it matters.... ie. Pattick Chan, and that Holingsworth girl that did the skeleton. The US on the other hand rarely chokes when they have a medal hopeful.. Heck Lindsay Vonn won a gold with an injury.

For me, I am happy with the medals won and to be honest I don't care too much about the outcomes of the events. What has really impressed me is the joy, humility, "greatfulness" and poise of the athletes. Watching them being interviewed and receiving their medals has been so inspiring that it has certainly overcome any cynicism I may have held regarding the owning the podium slogan. While centered in Vancouver, I think that the Olympics, partly through the own the podium idea but more because of the magnetism of the athletes, have achieved the goal that VANOC had of making it the Canadian Games.

Very well said steverino, I couldn't agree more.

Somewhere Out There
I think the country is doing great - and if we manage to finish top 5 that is even better!!! Realistically we were never going to win the medal race in any event, so who cares about the count and let's just cheer on the athletes and enjoy the show.

I'm trying to understand
Don't waste your time trying to understand anything huny has to say. huny is a negative, hate filled individual who doesn't see good in anything or anybody. At the end of the day, that's his problem.

I think a lot of the problem is probably the unrealistic expectations from the media and such - according to what was being said earlier I was thinking Canada would be either first or a close second in the total number of medals. Based on initial expectations I was a bit disappointed but think they are still doing pretty good all things considered.

Must be interesting to have your worm's-eye view of the world

Canadians are winning more medals per capita.

We are starting off with a much smaller pool to draw talent from. I think we are doing well considering Canada's population is that of the state of California.
Good call Amie, 1/3 the medals with 1/10 the population.
Although that doesn't explain Norway's success, with a population roughly that of Alberta's....

What an idiotic thread and this has to be a joke as I can't imagine anybody showing as little class as hunny. Our athletes have been busting their asses for us. Sometimes shit happens and the results don't come as hoped for; and when that's the case there's nobody more disappointed then the athletes themselves. Whatever the results may be, they're really irrelevant and secondary to the effort, sacrifice and hard work they've been putting in for our country.

it starts with funding at the grass roots level–
government and corporations must invest in sports (and not just hockey) similar to the US.
it's sad to hear that Canada's athletes are training with not much help from our government.

imagine if every high school had a hockey, football, baseball, basketball team?
until that happens, Canada will only be good at fringe sports at best.
maybe the gold medalist are stating their case.

You want to be more like the Americans? Just keep fussing about how many medals the Canadian atheletes win. Eventually the level of education in Canada will be low enough that we will be just like the Americans.

On the other hand we could demonstrate some intelligence and focus on boring things like education, health care, child poverty and half sane laws.

You want more sports? How about taking the "Own the Podium" funding and putting it into recreational activities for kids in school?

The olympic atheletes are spectacular. The spectacle and commentary on the Olympics is pathetic.
