WTF is wrong with people???? Apparently, there has been this intense backlash to Alexander Ovechkin's 50th goal celebration. iheard about in on the radio and watched it on Youtube and I can't believe what people are saying about it. Players are saying its disgraceful, disrespectful and over the top. Most of these people are canadian which begs the question, are we taking hockey too seriously???
In case you weren't aware SPORTS IS ENTERTAINMENT!!!!! Ovechkin does just that. He does the amazing ,the unexpected and likes to put an exclamation point on it from time to time. He has never been insulting or disrespectful in any of these celebrations and in this one did not put down either the Tampa goaltender or the team. He was just having a little fun. All accounts of him tell of a happy go-lucky guy who is nothing but a positive presence in the Capitals dressing room. So, why we begruging him any enjoyment he receives from excelling in the game we love???
I have thought of arguments against his celebration. The one is the role model argument. Parents won't want their child emulating his behaviour. Another news flash ATHLETES ARE NOT ROLE MODELS!!! They can choose to be and should be to their own children, but it is not a responsibility they are required to take on. I wouldn't mind if I had a kid who enjoyed playing hockey half as much as he does.
Another is that in football has stopped such celebration and IMO it has become a no fun league. We pay good money to watch athletes play. These celebrations, as long as they are not out right ofensive, durogatory or insulting, give the fans something extra. An example of a bad celebration was Terell Owens running out to the star in Dallas. A good one is the one the Calgary Stampeders did when a group of them in the end zone pretended to drink from the ball like it was a bottle. LMAO!!!!
The point is that sports are supposed to be fun. Athletes with personality make the games we love a lot more watchable. I think people are afraid to enjoy themselves for fear some bad bit of karma will come and bite them in the ass. That's called living in fear. We're all here for a good time, not a long time. Let's enjoy ourselves and let others enjoy themelves, as long as they don't do it in a disrespectful or derogatory way. Ovechkin celebration doesn't qualify.
