Dog snared on baited hooks near Grouse Grind trail

RCMP in North Vancouver have issued a warning after a dog was snared by a cruel trap set with baited hooks near the Grouse Grind Trail yesterday morning.

Professional dog walker Hallie Mitchell was out walking her dogs near the Baden Powell trail on Thursday around 10:30 a.m. PT when a two-year-old labradoodle named Kelly left the trail and failed to returned when she called it.

"I scrambled up the hill as I heard screaming begin from the dog. At first didn't know what I was seeing. I just thought I was seeing him leashed through the tree, but as I got closer I realized that he had his face full of hooks and a mass hanging from his face."

The snare was baited with beef kidneys strung together with wire and barbed hooks. She soon discovered it had bitten into a piece of meat that was hanging about 1½ metres off the ground.

Mtichell began calling for help, and when several hikers arrived, she was was able to get control of the dog and remove several hooks embedded in its mouth. The dog was taken to a local veterinarian and released several hours later without serious injuries.

Police were called in to investigate and the meat was tested but was not found to be poisoned.

They determined the crude trap was made by stringing beef kidneys together with wire and a series of five barbed hooks. The snare was then suspended with rope and duct tape from a stick placed next to a tree.

"This very disturbing incident warrants the police advising the public to be extra vigilant when walking their dogs in that area," said Cpl. Richard De Jong, spokesman for the North Vancouver RCMP.

Kelly, the two-year-old labradoodle, is recovering at home with his owner Christine Smith. "The police have conducted a thorough search of the area and did not locate any similar objects."

De Jong said they have no suspects in the incident.

Thank god the dog is okay... But to me, it makes no difference if the thing was meant for a different species because there's no excuse for this kind of barbarism - PERIOD. Trapping, I don't care if it's legal, it's still evil and unquestionably wrong, wrong, WRONG! And even morally confused people who see nothing wrong with trapping and cruelly killing certain arbitrarily chosen species can't argue that traps can discriminate or that animals of all kind of species don't end up losing their lives, including beloved pets. Sick. No excuse or justification. But when the government not only sanctions but also actively promotes the gruesome, barbaric, absolutely revolting practice of smashing helpless baby seal by the tens of thousands every year, then it's not difficult to understand how backwards some people can continue to be.

But anyway, everyone knows lots of dogs are in this area and must have known a dog would get caught - that's if it wasn't deliberately meant for a dog.

Sick, sick person. Watch your dogs!!!

I heard about this the other day. Any one who hurts animals like that has something seriously wrong with the wiring in their brain.

There was a puppy that was beaten to death in a motel in Victoria a couple years ago. That guy, he is LUCKY to be in jail after what Victorians had to say about it!!!!

There was one less than a year ago here in Vancouver. He recently plead guilty but not sure what the sentence will be... Likely not severe enough. Worthless piece of garbage, poor excuse for human being.

Poor, poor dog..

As long as the ass kicking is in the town square....
Scarey thing is research shows that individuals that abuse, torture, etc animals also tend to be the same individuals that later go on to do the same to humans. Future serial killers, etc.

Hmm, as snide as this comment is, I kind of have to agree...Sounds like the dog wasn't on a leash and just wandered off.

But still trapping is a horrific thing to do. I'm vehemently against the abusive treatment of animals/livestock, and feel they should be killed humanely if made for food.

My cousin was doing part time work at residences detailing cars, so she went with her partner to the residence and her partner went looking for the clients...while she waited she heard a horrible scream from an animal in the backyard and went to go check it out, it was a squirrel trapped in a man-made trapping device, the squirrel was so distressed and screaming and scurrying to get out, so she put all her strength in releasing it and finally succeeded after a few tries. When her partner came back, it turns out they were at the wrong house...and they later thought that it was such a coincidence almost like faith that she was there to save that squirrel. I asked her why was there a trap there? She says it looked like they always trap squirrels or other tree animals and she didn't care if it would upset them, she couldn't let a poor helpless animal suffer like that infront of her.

Maybe the area was off leash... Just sayin'. There are some off leash trails you know.

Even if it wasn't, that's not the dogs fault, it's the walker's... and the hook definitely ended up in the dog and not the dog walker so..

And finally, other animals that live there aren't leashed either and they don't deserve it either, especially since there wouldn't be a walker to get them to of the trap and they'd either seriously injure themselves the struggle to get free - and that's if they managed to get away and didn't die a slow, painful death.

Oh. And children running around and playing aren't leashed either (though many of them really should, along with the lemon spray anti bark stuff... that would be awesome!)...

Bottom line is it isn't really relevant whether the are was off leash and if the dog was because the thing was bound to attract an animal or a little (human) beast.

Court hears gruesome details during sentencing of Captain’s tormentor *** GRAPHIC ***

Sobs and gasps filled a packed courtroom Tuesday as the Crown shared grisly details surrounding the death of a German shepherd left beaten and discarded in a Vancouver dumpster last summer.

Brian Whitlock appeared in B.C. Provincial Court Tuesday for a sentencing hearing after he admitted to beating two-year-old Captain with a baseball bat before abandoning his dog in an alleyway garbage bin.

The 26-year-old stared blankly throughout the proceedings while sitting behind a glass barrier inside the courtroom filled with animal rights advocates and reporters.

Some in the gallery wiped away tears as the Crown detailed how Whitlock hammered his pet with a bat three or four times.

The former Kitsilano man, who has been behind bars since February after violating previous bail conditions, claimed he was trying to euthanize Captain when he came to believe someone had poisoned the dog.

One psychiatric report asserted Whitlock suffered from paranoid schizophrenia, but a contrasting evaluation concluded he was simply exaggerating his symptoms so he could be placed in a mental health institution.

The Crown is calling for Whitlock to serve four-to-six months jail, minus time served, and a lifetime ban on owning pets.

Animal rights activist Kat Chapman said she was shocked by the suggested sentence.

“The justice system sucks,” she said in between sobs. “This is all for nothing.”

Whitlock also faces mischief and assault charges stemming from two unrelated incidents. The maximum sentence for causing unnecessary harm to an animal is five years in prison.

The judge’s decision is expected later this month.

I completely agree....

Saw this lady come out of the liquor store at like 1 pm on a week day. She actually had 2 of them attached at one point. LOL
Lol

I've seen it a mall too. But I remember my parents having to do this once or twice with my hyperactive brother. He was such a spazz that it only took 5 seconds being distracted and he was gone. They had to make sure they took his shoes off whenever he was playing in our backyard because almost as soon as he'd started walking he also started climbing over the fence faster than anyone could get to him. Without shoes on, he couldn't do it cause the metal fence hurt his feet. Some people are offended by the harness/'leash' thing on children. I'm far more offended by wild brats running around on a rampage and breaking stuff or hurting themselves. Some kids really do need it and it's unfortunate many of their parents can't realize it. But hey, patenting skills aren't a requirement for breeding so I guess that's to be expected. Lol :p

Oh but I've never seen anyone use the citronella spray thing on kids though I'd love to - I'm so mean lol

Yeah, that guy is really the lowest of the low. I subscribe to that lady's Facebook group about Captain because every time I see his picture, it breaks my heart. Thinking about what the guy did to him just makes me so angry and sad at the same time. By the time that piece of garbage dumped him in the trash, the poor dog was paraplegic. I mean what kind of fucked up person does this. That guy is a sociopath FOR SURE. He wanted to euthanize the dog? Seriously? No normal person says that shit. And obviously he hadn't killed the dog, so after injuring it with a baseball bat, he just figured he'd throw him in the dumpster and that the dog would eventually die there? W.T.F?

And the law thinks 4 - 6 months is anywhere close to enough time in jail for someone who obviously isn't sorry about doing what he did and has no excuse to explain his demented actions?

Just how backwards is a society that thinks that is appropriate while in comparison:

Mandatory Minimum Sentences for Schedule II Drugs
(CANNABIS AND MARIJUANA)

• Trafficking: 1-2 YEARS minimum

• Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking: 1-2 YEARS minimum

• Importing/Exporting: 1 YEAR minimum

• Possession for the Purpose of Exporting: 1 YEAR minimum

• Production of 6 - 200 plants: 6 MONTHS minimum
With Health and Safety Factors: 9 MONTHS minimum

• Production of 201 - 500 plants: 1 YEAR minimum
With Health and Safety Factors: 18 MONTHS minimum

• Production of more than 500 plants: 2 YEARS minimum
With Health and Safety Factors: 3 YEARS minimum

• Production of oil or resin: 1 YEAR minimum
With Health and Safety Factors: 18 MONTHS minimum

Kids, if you're going to do something crazy in your youth, make sure you kill a dog or cat and stay away from pot because that's evil..??
It's absolutely insane, not to mention morally corrupt!!

As for trapping, this is what I mean - sick people are seen as perfectly ordinary, normal people in our society and our civilized laws deem this sort of twisted, obscene, disgusting abuse totally legal:

Coyote mangled by leg-hold trap sparks renewed calls for ban

... found the young coyote in a wooded area of Abbotsford..
...worst case of an animal suffering from a trap she has ever seen...

here

I refuse to accept this as "normal" or acceptable. People who do this are sadistic fucks and I don't want them anywhere near me. They're the ones who should be placed in a leg hold trap for two weeks! (And if you own a stupid Canada Goose jacket, that's where your fur trim is from. That makes you personally responsible for the torture of coyotes...and as much of a douchebag if you don't see a problem with that kind of extreme cruelty.)
