Post-retirement from pay for play I still read CL for entertainment purposes. Some of the most interesting stuff can be found in the missed connections and rants and raves sections. This one post caught my eye:

psychotic girl on 98 B-line south, slammin' Wisers Dexule - 23

Dear Psycho.

I got on the 98 B line yesterday aroung 4:30 pm, at Robson and Seymour. I was standing at the back, and noticed you sitting in the back corner. I thought nothing of you. The wheels on the bus went round and round, and to my my surprise you pulleda 40 of whiskey out of your bag, and my god, you drank it down! I noticed yoy taking swig after swig, and I was truly flabergasted! You were well dressed, well groomed, and at a first glance by anyone, a rather good looking girl. You really did not fit any image in my mind, of the raging coked out acoholic lunatic that you were about to unleash in yourself. We were over the Granville bridge, and you were down about ten shots by now, possibly more, and the bus was rather packed. I think, that you thought, you were being watched by many people, who you thought were judging your personal apperance. Yes people took a few peeks at you, but i assure you it had nothing to do with your looks. They merely were shocked when they saw, at the end of there work day, a rather normal looking girl drinking her troubles away. I however, was not shocked but rather disgusted in you. You did ruin my bus ride, and after 70th avenue, you did something really stupid. You put an illegal substance up your nose. Cocaine. This is where things went sour. We arrived at airport station and you started banging on the window with your right hand, creating quite the spectacle, and generally making a complete moron out of yourself. "give me a smoke! someone give me a smoke! does anyone have a FUCKIGN SMOKE!???" these were the words you angrily shreaked. Sadly at this point i had to leave. Had I stayed on the bus and waited, i think i would have quite the show. you were maybe 1/4 done your bottle and the cocaine had just started to take its effect. I feel sorry for all of the average people who saw you, in your horrifying disgusting state. I feel sorry for any seniors or children on the bus. I however, do not feel sorry for you. If you are going to be a raging lunatic, do it in the comfort of your own home, not on a public bus. That ride would have been a lot more pleasant sans you. Thank you for taking the time to read this. I hope you swallow a shard of glass.

I was on the skytrain out of downtown once. There was a guy sitting across from me drinking out of a bottle. He was keeping to himself and a few others took notice but he seemed okay at the time. I was paying attention to him because there were a few children onboard also. I was looking out of my window when I got the distinct smell of poppers. I haven't seen them for over 20 years but the smell was something you wouldn't forget. The car was full of the smell. People were coughing and such but it didn't seem anyone knew what the smell was or were it was coming from. I waited till the next stop, stood up and "escorted" the guy off of the train. Some of Vancouver's "finest" were standing on the loading dock checking people for tickets and were quite interested in seeing this guy with a half drunk bottle of rum.......

By 'Vancouver's Finest' do you mean the skytrain security with their little tazers? 'Cause that is who checks the tickets.

Possibilities

The sad thing though is if someone tried to tell her to put away her drugs and booze she probably would have freaked out on them.
Or she might have spent the next hour crying on their shoulder. It's hard to know which response we are more fearful of.

You do know that they're not private security guards, they're actually police, right? They've got full authority to arrest people etc.

I don't get it when people take on the attitude the writer has.

Her behaviour is pathetic, which means "to cause or evoke pity"
The definition of pity is: "sympathetic or kindly sorrow evoked by the suffering, distress, or misfortune of another, often leading one to give relief or aid or to show mercy"

Is there any mercy in our world?

This girl is so horribly fucked up she is doing this behaviour in public as a cry for help. I can only see it as that. This is her alternative to blocking traffic on the Lions Gate Bridge at rush hour as she attempts a jump.

What's really sad is likely no one said a word to her. Even if it was just to tell her to put away her alcohol and drugs. I know I would have had a tough time saying something myself. I probably wouldn't have either. It's shameful, really, that we are such an uncaring society that we watch people trainwreck without any care other than to rubberneck and to have some new elevated peg to hang our inflated egos upon.

The writer is a coward, just like most of us. We stand by and watch and have the gall to make flippant comments like his, all righteous and pompous, yet we don't have the fortitude to stand up and walk over and compassionately look into the persons eyes and tell them they can't do what they are doing here, in a gentle kind way.

It's all very sad.

I don't know how smart it is to confront someone you don't even know who is fueled by both alcohol and drugs. What do you do if you end up with someone with alcohol or drug-induced psychosis flipping out on you and becoming violent. People under the influence are more likely to become violent if they feel threatened or provoked, and you confronting them might just be the provocation that sends them over the edge. If you're going to do anything I'd say the smartest thing to do would be call the police and let someone trained to deal with out of control people deal with the problem.

For the children in India whose parents make them beg on the street, I pity them. In North America, there has been millions put into resources for helping people with addictions and problems and are all readily available for whoever chooses to use them.

You can't tell an addict they need to quit, they have to hit rock bottom before they choose themselves to die or get help. No matter how much you try to "be a friend" or "help" nothing will come of it until they are ready to do so.

Approaching the girl on the bus would have been an unwise move. What if she lashed out at a child, or an elderly person in retaliation? Possibly alerting the bus driver, waiting for authorities to come and clear the back so they could escort her out would have been better.
