Nexus Passholders

I've heard a few, but not many stories that people who have Nexus passes are not allowed to have non Nexus cardholders in their vehicle while in the Nexus lane. What a few are doing, they're having their friends who dont have Nexus cards walk across the border.

Now, me thinks that may not be a good thing. I know when I travelled with a buddy of mine to the US or Mexico and returning back to Canada, they want to see the person who accompanied me as well.

Has anyone walked across the Canada/USA Border and was there any hassle?

I wonder what's the punishment or consequences if you drive by "accident" through the Nexus lane when there is a 3+ hour line-up?

They might just send you to the back of the line  It isn't like you're the first one to think of that. Either that or they will send you inside, and you can face a much longer lineup while you wait for someone to ask you why you went that way. Unless you are driving across for the first time ever or with a brand new license plate #, chances are they know that you know what the Nexus line is for.

Lots of line-jumpers go to the duty-free. They aren't fooling anyone, but they are supposed to show proof of purchase.

If you want to avoid lineups, don't go thru Peace Arch, and check borderlineup.com (I think that is it), and choose the one with the least cars.

This isn't the best time to try to push the boundaries of the rules lol.

Yeah, I do that sometimes. Go to the Duty Free, by a bottle of water or gum and make my way out. Here is my receipt, I say. ;)

I wonder though, so you have to wait a 1/2 hour or so inside going through secondary inspection etc. It still might be worthwhile if the line-up to the border is 3 hours and only 5 minutes at the Nexus Lane.

For me though, I wouldnt do it...I dont have that kind of patience of sense of adventure but I think there are people out there who just thrive on this kind of a thrill.

1/2 an hour??

Not if they want to teach you a lesson lol.

I guess it depends on how busy they are inside: sometimes long lineup outside = long lineups inside. Plus you are "tagged" as a trouble maker so even when there is no line outside, they might send you inside on your next few trips.

The best advice for border crossing is don't make waves, don't make jokes, don't rock the boat, just wait in line and answer the questions (Oh, and no matter what the lane on the left (at 176th) looks like, stay in the right. For some reason it still moves faster because near the booths, it seems to branch off into more lanes than the left lane does.

So for example, I'm on a road trip and I have a nexus pass, but my buddies don't, we can't use the nexus line?

Nope, you can't use it. Everyone in the car has to have a nexus pass to use the nexus line.

By the way, the laws provide for a HUGE fine for using the nexus lane 'accidentally' and they can impound your car on the spot until you pay the fine.

I forget the precise amount but I think it was something like up to $10,000 (of course that wouldn't be for a first offence but I'm sure they keep track if you try it more than once).

I'm sure that they rarely fully apply the law but you don't want to be the guy who tries it and just happens to look like the ex-spouse of the PMSing custom's agent who ran out of midol the day before...

And I would NOT try anything with the US side, odds are that they can actually toss you in jail for it and again, you don't want to run up against some Charles Bronson wannabe named "Roscoe" who just got transferred up from the Mexican border and still wears his mirror sunglasses.,. You'll 'make his day'.

Nexus is great

Well worth applying for! I never ever think about the 3 hour summer border line ups. Just breeze right through. Same at airport, with the Nexus retina scan. Only cost $50 an adult, kids free - good for 5 years.

Unfortunately I was reading that a lot of smugglers are using Nexus lanes by having those without criminal records apply for the card. This may be why sometimes you'll see line-ups and get crazy assed questions at the border heading to the USA.

right behind you!
Noob,

You now Nexus doesn't mean your not going to get inspected. Happened to me the other day, just a random stop. And well I really enjoyed it, the customs agent was HOT, and she had her hands all over my things!

That said, I also was stopped on the US side a few months ago, and it wasn't as hot, the old guy holding my things, I repeat, not so hot....

here are some Nexus related stories for those of you interested...

It doesn't matter that you might get inspected at the Nexus gate. The point is, it only takes you 2 minutes to get there. Try waiting 3 hours in line, then get pulled over for an inspection!

Nexus questions

I was thinking about doing the Nexus thing as well as I quite often go to Adult biz trade shows in the States. The problem is I'm worried that my occupation as an Adult content producer might unfairly prejudice them against me.

Is disclosing the details of your employment a part of the nexus application process?
