Why waste money on shelter for the homeless and destitute when you can build a gallery for rich hipsters?
How much of that donations was tax write offs from admission to rich people parties?

Vancouver has never had any culture. The art gallery is a joke.

If I want culture I'd go to Europe.

My SO is in Paris right now. I couldn't get away unfortunately

I had to spend 8 hours in emergency waiting room a short while ago.
If we do feel build some kind of centre ...why not build a center for complaints about nurses and doctor shortages, homelessness, rising medical costs and long emergency room waits.
How about opening more colleges for nurses and doctors instead!
Canada needs to get it's priorities straight!

This is pandering to rich donors. Period.

Same as the bullshit human rights museum in Winnipeg. Nothing but a trough for funneling taxpayer money to backers of both the Libs and Cons. BOTH did it.

Get everyone you know to write their MP and say fuck you to this waste. And your provincial and city hacks as well.

Check to see if the builders have party links.

It’s insulting to the people living in the gutter while the rich assholes step over them to look at “art” donated (for tax writeoffs) or bought with taxpayer dollars.

You need to calm down. The bulk majority of that $30 million was from some federal green building grant program - you know, the type of federal giveaways (mostly left minded) folks love as a "climate change" policy/initiative. The other $4 or $5 million came from Heritage Canada. And yes, the Vancouver Art Gallery is a registered not for profit entity and a registered charity - so what??? If a couple of rich families want to donate over $100 million of THEIR money to the Vancouver Art Gallery, so what??? I would imagine as rich as those two families are - they probably donate plenty to other causes (some which you may even agree with). Point being, you think donation tax credits are "wrong" because you don't like what they donate to. Hate to break it to you, it don't work like that.

Where does the money for those grants come from? Surely not taxpayers!
$4 or $5 million came from Heritage Canada.
Heritage Canada, nothing to do with taxpayers, got it.

If I recall correctly I have just as much right to complain about government spending money as the elites of Vancouver. You might not like it but that’s democracy for you.

All government money comes from taxpayers, but that isn't the point. You brought up homeless folks. So, if some charity wanted to build an "uber green" homeless shelter, applied for some government grant for building a "green" homeless shelter and got some money through said government program - you would be silent. Your whining should be directed to those charities that are not building "uber green" homeless shelters so that they may avail themselves of all that delicious government handouts - as opposed to whining at the art gallery for availing themselves of a government program that pretty much any entity could avail themselves of. Now, if you're saying government shouldn't subsidize charities writ large, I totally agree. There should be no charitable deductions, there should be no "green" building grants, etc. etc., etc. But somehow, I would wager that is not your position. You just want to complain about whom the money is spent on! You will whine/complain about a government handout to a church, but applaud the same handout to a homeless shelter, whine about a handout to an art gallery, but applaud a handout to the SPCA. So, just stop with your virtue signalling - you actually do want government handouts, so long as the handouts meet YOUR "virtuous" standards.

I was just sort of looking at the big picture. No pun intended or whatever the expression should be. I am not all that sympathetic to the shit show that is skid row. However it's hard not to see that something is wrong with the optics of this city. Smacks of a sort of Marie Antoinette "let them eat cake" lack of any grasp of reality.

There is more money in tourism, unfortunately Vancouver city hall has pushed it too far in allowing the woke attitude in city council to rule. Their attitude is,
If you move here and don't like it, move on, if you have lived here all your life and don't like it , move on, if you live here and comply to their decisions, pay your inflated taxes and shut the #### up.

During WWII there was discussion in the British Parliament on cutting funding for the arts to fund more of the war causes. The reply from Churchill was " The arts are essential to any complete national life. The State owes it to itself to sustain and encourage them. The country possesses in the Royal Academy an institution of wealth and power for the purpose of encouraging the arts of painting and sculpture…. " which has been altered over time to the statement "what are we fighting for if not the arts".

Hey, I am all for fiscal responsibility but music and art in general is as important to any advanced society as any other discipline so me being the Red Tory politically has no problem with spending tax payer money on the arts. The $1B for the heritage museum, well that was just the wrong thing/wrong time but the Vancouver Art Gallery project has been in the works for well over 8 years. Sure tax payer money can be spent in a myriad of different ways and Vancouver has a homeless problem. But tell me one major city out there that doesn't have the same problem and that serious mental health issue is one that not going to be solved by just money.

Anyway, my 2bits on the topic of spending money for the arts.

What did Churchill have to say about the arts in relation to homelessness? Anyway. It is probably people with the same mindset as the ones firing rockets into space and getting all excited about colonizing mars while planet earth is sinking in garbage.

The new Art Gallery is needed but I don’t think this is the time to use tax dollars. I think Horgan got it right last week when the NDP stopped the BC Museum’s $700M upgrade was canceled.

Just coming out of a pandemic while handing out $ all over the place doesn’t make sense to me to build a massive Art Gallery.

Canadian Military will be receiving $ to increase our contribution to NATO. The CF18’s are due for replacement and that’s a multi billion $ investment.

There will be a tax increase to cover all this deficit spending eventually.

Tax increases are already happening on fuel and carbon tax, and booze tax etc.
I could go on about how the military needs alot more than replacements for the CF18s. New ships, new tanks, new transports, more cold weather equipment like snowmobiles, tractors, new armoured vehicles heavy and light.
But above all it needs more people (so if wanting a new job, join the CAF). If going to university, you can join the reserves and still go to university (depending on the plan).

The problem with the military is that for the last 40 years its been run by policies of "human betterment", the kinder nicer armed forces; who when the going gets tough( someone yells, tells a off-coloured joke, or tells you to do your fucking job), go shopping (when the going get tough, the tough go shopping== joke). Me, I prefer the tough lean mean fighting machine of Clint Eastwood's Heartbreak Ridge... People who haul ass and kick ass... Not asswipes and shit pumps who cause nothing but problems because they have a hangnail or civil rights. They give you rifle, with bullets and you fire downrange to hit people that are the enemy. Normally thats called murder....

Did I ever mention that there are 7 billion people in the world. We all do not get along.

Look at Ukraine. And WAR sucks.... I like that US slogan, talk softly and carry a big stick......
