My portable music player just died on me. So, I am looking around for a replacement. I am considering going with an ipod 1 gb player (but i don't know if it is worth the $200+). I really want something that is dependable and looks aren't that important. Although i do prefer the player to be a bit small. I Just wanted to know whether there is another model or brand that you guys would recommend (max 1gb). Also, like to know where i can go to get a good deal (future shop, london drugs, etc........).

appreciate any tips.

Price wise, Walmart is the best bet IMHO. Brands, Sony, Panasonic, well known ones are good.

I went thru this dillema about a year ago and, after a ton of researching and going to stores and testing them out, I went with the ipod. It syncs with itunes so well, and the controls are easy to learn and use. The sync thing is huge with me, and I'd think it's even a bigger thing for someone who has only 1 gig of storage, as you'd likely be swapping out your playlists quite often.

I think the only 1gig Ipod is the shuffle, kinda lame IMO. Doesn't even have a display.

The IPOD Shuffle is 512MB and has no display, guess I was not into music that much, I only had HALF of mine space used. Then the battery died and I took it back to the store. Might go with another one, haven't decided

Well IMHO I did the suffering through the Ipod and found it to be garbage. I installed and uninstalled, lost my downloaded music to god knows where. So I went with the Sony MP3 player they kick ass and got the 1GB player. BestBuy for $129.00 still works like brand new to this day. That is what I went and got Sexy and it was crapola with a capitol C...LOL

I buy most of my electronics like car audio and MP3 player's games, etc. out of BestBuy I got my 27 inch LCD tv monitor for my computer there for a good price, paid $450.00 and it was reg $ 525.00. But for things like home theatre, and home stereo equipment, that good shit come's "only" from The Sony Store.

thanks everyone for all the reply and suggestions. Definately appreciate the input. I'll definately drop by Walmart to see what they have in stock, and i'll compare the sony and ipod nano.

To Hitrack: ipod actually has the ipod nano which comes in 1gb and above. the 1 gb retails for about $189 and i believe it has a lcd screen.

The 1 gig is the Nano, and has a full colour display, just like the real iPod! I'll add that I was totally anti-Apple anything when I started shopping for mine. If ya think about it, the iPod is the top seller for a reason. And every other company is trying to match it for a reason. The downside to the Apple players is their batteries, unless that's changed now. You can only get the rechargeable battery replaced by Apple. I got the Futureshop extended 3-year warrany though for 99 bucks, and it includes the battery replacement for the full 3 years. If I didn't get that policy, I woulda said 'screw that'. I still do think that Apple needs to fix this aspect of their players. Check dis.
The 512 iPod shuffle does suck ass IMO also. But my nephews love theirs.

Doesn't Sony have it's own format, like ATRAC or something like that?

I bought a Creative Muvo Micro about a year ago. The power on/off died after about 4 months. Creative sent me a replacement and I've had no problems since.

Go to www.cnet.com and you can do research and read user reviews on various players.

portable music

still use my original nomad from creative labs for working out, that thing is indistructable (memory storage a bit low compared with newer products though)

after much research picked up a Hi MD player/recorder on sale at london drugs (can't beat the service and return policy there) (MD is mini disc)

Love this unit, can store 1 gig on a Hi MD disc and have my music by disc rather than large playlists. I use this player on my boat, and my car as well. In the car I play mostly audio books.

I think it is too bad Sony had not gained more marketshare in NA with these little guys. In asia they are still very big. The drive unit inside is a Magneto Optical Drive. The Hi Md can store data as well as music so this thing takes the place of an Iomega drive as well for storage of data files.

Regular md discs are cheap and the Hi MD are a bit more expensive.

Sony used to have some restrictions on uploading recorded music to your computer, but with the iPod competition that is now gone.

Wish they would come out with an indash car unit for Hi MD though.

http://www.minidisc.org/ try this site for news and reviews on md.

Hope you find this useful

I bought the cheapest 1GB chinese knockoff player I could find on Ebay for $50 about 8 months ago. Also has FM and a voice recorder I use it just about every day works great. All it needed was a better set of headphones. You could probably get the same model now for about $25
