need tech help

ok all you bright people out there. i am looking to buy a laptop for one of my kids as a high school grad present they are going on to university. dont need on for gaming. both them and myself have dell no problems with them.hoping for around the grand mark.

Future Shop has some decent Toshibas at around the $1,000 mark. Otherwise, you can't do too badly with Dell...there system "chooser" works quite well and will give you a good idea of what you can get and what it will work for.

I would also recommend that, if you can, get XP and not Vista. Dell has started offering XP on their products again because there was enough demand for it and people were finding that Vista was a bit of a resource hog.

as for where to shop, try London Drugs ... their prices are good,
but their no hassle return policy and on-site fixes (if you buy the
extended on-site replacement warranty) is great!

couple things i would recommend ... get a stand or docking station
with it ... get an external keyboard and mouse too. students are
notorious for spilling stuff and its better to trash a $50 keyboard
than soak a $1000 laptop! (yes, i have done it! to both!) ... and
external HD or other form of saving info off the laptop is also good ...

not the first time someone has had their laptop and thesis
stolen in one go!!!

also check with your home insurance about coverage ... kids
at school can be covered under your policy so if the laptop
is declared and insured by you its an easy replacement.

If your kid is going to university invest $50 and get the Lojack for laptops. This will enable you to recover the laptop if stolen. I also purchased a next day accidental damage replacement service contract. You don't want problems if they are in the middle of a project or exams.
