That's a US law. In Canada taping is legal if just one party of the conversation knows (i.e. you). You couldn't tape a conversation between two other people that you weren't a part of without consent, but if you were one of the participants you can.

If she had never used the thing she is going to have a hard time arguing that it was stolen. Remind her that filing a false report is a crime, and if it came to that you WOULD press charges.
As for her telling friends and family, if she does then simply deny it. Tell them you had hard breakup, and why, and that now she is making things up to try to hurt you. Chances are they will believe you before they believe her.
Beyond that, if she contacts you again, tell her to stop bothering you, and if she persists, that you may have to get an injunction.

Thanks for all the input. Had coffee with her today, met downtown and brought a buddy a a witness. Gave her back the ipad and told her that was all she was getting and that I made copies of all our correspondences and if she tried anything I'd go straight to the police. She got really nervous and tried to laugh it off saying it was an aprils fools joke from her. I haven't seen her since early jan so it was kind of shitty seeing her like that. She didn't look good, like super skinny and not healthy maybe on something. I thought about what one of the posters said about me just being a sugar daddy to her and it kind of makes me sad because I actually really liked her. I just feel kind of stupid now and like I wasted a lot of time and emotion on a woman who didn't really care about me. At least with hobbying both sides know what's going on and what's to be expected.
