Now is the time for all Americans to help our fellow citizens. In the next few weeks you will see the UNITED states of america pull together. First is the efforts needed to save lives…..many people have died and many more are in harms way. The emergency services in the Big Easy need to stay focused……if a lady needs to take diapers or food out of a store….go for it….do what you need to do to survive…..

Once all has been done to rescue any survivors…..the police can turn their attention to bring law and order back to the city. Basic civil services will need to be restored and they will….city, county state and federal government will put politics aside as Americans always do in crises and do what is right.

Then will come the long term restoration. A very large city with a proud and rich culture needs to be restored. And that will take money…..lots of money….

Now just watch as cities all across America start to pull together and raise the money that is needed to help nawlins.

So what can you do? Donations to a reputable charity would be a great start. Words of encouragement and support to those victims would mean more than you could imagine.

I am sure many of them are feeling alone and isolated. They need to know that 300 million Americans are coming together along with nations around the world who want to have a positive impact on a disastrous event.

More than anything else these people need your moral support and a good start would be a message from the government of Canada delivered by your prime minister.

From the National Post:

Prime Minister Paul Martin issued a statement Wednesday, offering condolences and support to the American people.

"Like all Canadians, I am distressed by the destruction and loss of life wrought by hurricane Katrina," Martin said.

"During this most difficult time, Canada stands with you, and we are ready to provide whatever support you may require in the days, weeks and months ahead," he said.

Martin added that Deputy Prime Minister Anne McLellan and other cabinet members have contacted their U.S. counterparts to help determine what help Canada can offer.

"We have made it clear that we are prepared to offer any and all possible assistance, and we will continue to work closely with our neighbours as they deal with this terrible event."

New Orleans is by far my favourite city in the US, and I hope they find the resources to rebuild. Luckily, it will cost a fraction of what it will cost to rebuild the destruction in Iraq, so I am sure that the US government will be able to manage.

Hank stay on topic

You had to throw in a shot about Iraq at the end of your otherwise decent post didn't you, Hank?

The thread is about New Orleans shit for brains.

If I were American, not only wouldn't I welcome your comments, I would turn my back on any help you personally offered. You are a grade-A asshat.

Hank, thanks for posting the message from your PM. My news sources right now is limited to CNN, I have not seen that or messages from any country for that matter.

You are about to witness the genrosity of Americans and in the next few weeks see enough money flow directly from the people to help rebuild all of the area hit by the storm.

I am not sure why you choose to take a shot, but you and just a few others on the board see this as the opportunity to display your hate for America.

The USA is very fortunate to have for a neighbor the people of Canada. In a time of need on either side of the 49th is a time to put aside our differences and focus on helping these people any way we can.

Unfortuanately the looting has become such an issue. Police are abandoning the rescue effort and will tackle the looters. What is the point the City is toast? I can't believe how stupid the looters are, guys are wading around carrying big screen TV's. How stupid are these guys. Where are you gonna plug that in? Why don't you take food and water. All those people trapped in attics are going to perish because of all the fools who won't work together and think of only themselves causing chaos! This is going to be a very bad situation for a very long time, how sad!
well big screen TVs, if they can manage to get to the next city, they probably can sell it for some $$ ?

one thing that would make sense to grab, would be some of the boats at the marina. If they have enough fuel on board, you could ferry people to land with them.

There you go GV you just solved all the problems.

The biggest problem is they are going to re build the city in the same damn place. Right in the path of future hurricanes. 30 feet below sea level.

Lots of people have died or are stranded becasue "In 1969 it wasnt that bad" so we didn't think it would be that bad this time.

I don't quite get that attitude. Some obviously had no means to leave, but many were just to stubborn, not just in New Orleans but in Mississippi and Alabama too.

You would think the giant U S of A would have some better disaster planning in place. In all honesty things are moving too slowly.

The inability to manage the levey breaks in a time efficient manner has cost New Orleans months and billion of more dollars.

It is going to be a shame to spend the time and money to rebuild only to have it happen again.

HankQuinlan's post may have been a shot, but it is a fact the relief efforts so far have been incredibly slow for a nation so blessed with money, population, infrastructure, etc. The National Guard, usually deployed immediately I believe are in Iraq, so that is a factor, as is the ability of the military to respond. Canada has actually had their disaster relief teams there before most American teams. Makes you wonder just what disaster plans Bush has in place for terrorist attacks. Violence will increase the longer starving people have no help. It seemed the reaction to the tsunami was more immediate world-wide.

From the Chicago Tribune: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-0509010175sep01,1,7819431.story?coll=chi-newsnationworld-hed&ctrack=1&cset=true

That massive department [DHS] is facing its greatest test in light of the Katrina disaster. And some experts in disaster management believe that FEMA has been notably weakened.

Eric Holdeman, longtime director of emergency management for Seattle's King County, says that a single-minded federal focus on terrorism has "weakened our nation's ability to prepare for and respond to natural disasters" because it undermined a crucial relationship between federal and local relief agencies.

"What [the government] is saying is, `We're going to send you into the Super Bowl' -- and they are in the Super Bowl today, I guarantee you that -- `But you are never going to practice,"' he said. "And that to me is unconscionable."

All his fault.

He has been fighting a war for 4 years.

This is a result of POOR planning in Clinton's Administration, and Adminitstrations Before that more than this Administration.

A goverment can only do so much, and three - five years is such a short time in a beauracratic world.

Here is to hoping that the rest of the world will put in a great effort to help the US through these difficult time, or at least more than what the US did for the Asian tsunami disaster.

Some of us were talking about giving aid to the US, and the Netherlands came up. They know more than anybody about reclaiming land from the sea. Maybe they could provide advice about making more durable dikes-the North Sea can be very rough, and they have a wider temperature variation than New Orleans. If the city is rebuilt it should be carefully planned and not done in a haphazard manner.
DUDE, rough seas yes, but the Netherlands doesn't have that whole NAGGING HURRICANE issue.

It is not necissarily built in a haphazzard manner. It just happens to be 30feet below sealevel.

Well the Canadian DART team and equipment are being loaded onto ships as we chat and the Canadian Military is getting ready to answer the call if it arrives. What ever the US asks from us it will be ready to deploy in a matter of hours. Hope it helps Lucky.

Are you saying the US did nothing for the TSUNAMI disaster?
Nope, I was suggesting that perhaps the US could have done more. But now is not the time to discuss this. I donated $$ for the tsunami disaster, and I increased the donation to $$.5 this time around. Well, I guess my pooning budget for the month is almost gone. I hope fellow perbites will give what you can.

Actually it does. Even if the CDN military is not requested or deployed, just knowing they are on the ready and willing to help is comforting. I hope the people in the south are able to hear that news. I would assume communications is not working very well right now, but it is information like that that will let them know they are not alone.

Thanks for bring that out.

On different point It amazes me that the people who claim to be compassionate are the same ones who do not want to pass up the chance to take a shot at the US. 1000s dead, millions homeless, families separated, billions in damage and yet there are still the few who need to pick on the bones and take their shot.

Well during a disaster of this magnitude all disagreements and bad feelings must be set aside. And we must all pull together to help those in need.
thats just my opinion and I am ready for any flak that could be fired my way.

But Bush, in his briefing, stated that USA can help themselves..., pretty much saying that he does not need any help from Canada or other nations.
